Hello all, glad to be here.

I have purchased a 1986 Procraft with 86'Rude 90hp 16.5' from my dad. I'm very familure with the boat as I have probably put more hours on it than him. He bought the boat in 89 and has been garaged all its life and is in excellent condition.

The boat has been sitting up not used for almost 3 years being cranked every now and again. I have changed out the lower unit seals as they were leaking. Also while I was there changed water pump. I have carb kits, plugs, choke cover and valve(was leaking) and new fuel and water hoses to replace. The compression on the motor was 105psi in each hole. I have drained all fuel out and will flush once carb kits and hoses are installed.

My question is can you guys think of anything else I need to look at before i put her on the water? Is the compression worthy enough to keep running b4 rebuild?

Another question, she runs out about 46mph with 2 people @ about 5400 rpm's. I'm not sure what pitch the prop is (not labled, assumming stock stainless OMC) but it gets out of the hole good. What would a jack plate do for me about 4" worth? I would like to see more speed and a few more RPM's.

Thanks in advance for your help, dean

Welcome to iboats. Sounds like you have done your homework. you have pretty much all the bases covered with what you have and are going to do. I can't really think of anything that HAS to be done other than what you are doing. The 5400 rpms sounds about right but someone will be along shortly with the specs on it. For setup dhadley is pretty much the man on it but I don't mean to slight the others that are good at it too. I think the more you hang around this forum the more you will like it. Best of luck to you and enjoy the water.

you might want to change the tstats, and if you realy want to do the cooling system also change the waterflow restrictors behind the heads.
overtime they swell up and block more pasages then they should.
then you can inspect the cylinders (wich are probbebly fine) and instal new head gaskets.
check the temp switch if it still works.
specs are in manual. ground the wire see if horn works.
105 psi over all 4 i consider as exellent for this motor.

Good advice so far. The compression is fine. The important thing is that they are all the same.

You are a bit overpropped. That engine needs to be able to turn 5500 minimum.

A jack plate will probably help. If you are going to add one, don't change props until you see what the jack plate does for you.

Thanks for the fast responses and great advice. I have done my homework, on this forum. haha. You guys do an awesome job of helping people like me.

I havent thought of the cooling system. Good advice on that for sure. You jogged my brain. Good to hear about the compression #'s too, its a relief.

On the jack plate how do I determine how many inches to go with? Im hoping to get more rpm's out of it to get into the optimum operating range.

Dean....I've got the same engine on my rig. I've got it setup and will turn 5800 > 6000 rpm depending on load....this is a good range. These crossflows love to breath so get the revs up.

On set up, check the anti-cav plate in reference to the keel of the boat. Should set about 1 inch above. A 3" setback (jackplate) would help top end and allow you to raise the engine higher on the boat. (I don't have one cause my StarCraft 16'.... will get near 50mph with just me in the boat.....little scary.....d:) )

Rule of thumb, for ever degree of pitch added or subtracted from the props pitch, you will lose or gain 150 > 200 rpms.....increase>lose rpms......subtract>gain.

Maybe dhadley will jump in here and add some thoughts.

I agree on the speed part. 46mph is plenty fast for this boat and its size. Its actually rated for a 130hp. I think it would be a little hard to handle with 130 on it. But it'd be alot of fund:).

I think im gonna try the jack plate 3-4" setback and play with the set up to see if i can get the r's that the motor needs for longevity purposes. If I get more speed, that will be a plus.

After I get all this stuff done I'll post back to this thread and let you guys know how its going.

Thanks once again for the info, Dean
