Hold the "Ctrl" button,+ the "Alt" buttons down,...
Then hit the "Delete" button,.....
That should bring up the Windows Task Manager,....
Look,+ See what's still running, or turn it Off from there......

On the top of the dialoge box, above the tabs,....

Mine says, "File", "Options", "View", "Windows", "Shutdown", "Help".........

When you click on Shutdown, there's the Options available......

I can't believe Somebody who actually Knows what they're doing hasn't answered this thread since 7:am this morning..........

Try the old "Unplug it, let it set abit and then reboot" Trick. Might fix it`s self. I`ve had it work!

Hit ctrl-alt-del and look at processes (not applications) tab to see what's still running. Windows can't shutdown until all your processes do.

under processes everything under cpu is 00 but system idle process, that jumps from 98 to 99

taskmgr.exe 00 to 01

Hit "start", select "all programs" go to "accessories" then open the "system tool" folder. Click on "system restore",
select "restore my computer to an earlier time", choose the day before the problem began. This will reset all system settings to that earlier date.
Problem will most likely disappear.
Good luck!

You can try Start>run and type msconfig once the window opens go to startup tab and click on deselect all, reboot and see if that helps.

I had the same thing happen to my old pc,Thats what i ended up doing. Re-format and re-install operating system. That stinks but it will most likely fix it.

Re: Windows XP won't shut down ?

and have been using the free "high tech" mcafee from aol for years
just scaned with agv and it found 7 trojans.......
so aol users better beware, thier free virus scan and spyware is worthless to a degree
6 entries was trojan restarter

Re: Windows XP won't shut down ?

Did you upgrade office or is it a fresh install?

I'd look on the c drive for a folder at the top that starts with numbers, if there delete it. also delete everything in c:\windows\temp and try the update again.
