Motor is a 92 4hp Evinrude Deluxe...

Pulled the lower unit to replace the water pump impeller... The driveshaft stayed put. Any tips on how to get the drive shaft out?

Thanks!

How did you get the lower unit off if the driveshaft stayed put? Pull the pump housing up and released the impeller key?

Either the splines are corroded in or the splines are wore and "locked" in.

You can try inverting the engine and soaking the drive shaft spline with PB Blaster...where the splines enter the crankshaft. Let it soak a while. Working the driveshaft back and forth will help.

The engine turns clockwise. Hold the flywheel and turn the drive shaft in a clockwise direction. May turn enough to release the splines if worn.

This a salt water engine?

Re: Driveshaft won't come out...

I had a situation where the shaft had stuck in the power head. I removed the power head from the tower along with the shaft, put it upside down on the bench and ran Liquid wrench down the shaft. Let it soak for a few days. I used a Vice Grip clamped tightly on the unimportant part of the shaft and tapped the vice grip with a small soft face hammer. The shaft eventually came out. Too much hammering could of course damage the lower bearing so keep this in mind while working. Patience is a virtue in this. d:)
