I have a 90 HP Johnson outboard and I recently had the engine rebuilt. When the motor was put back together there is a problem with the power trim not working. It sounds like it is trying to work but the motor doesn't move. When we took the power head out the motor was trimmed down and inorder for me to move it we had to undo the relief screw on the side to raise the motor. When we put the power head back in and tightened up the screw the motor won't trim. Do you think we could have an air blockage in there or what is your opinion. It was working fine before the repair and it sounds like it should be working. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Bigfish

Make sure it isn't trimming down when you're using the UP button. See what happens wen you use the DOWN button. Does the electric trim motor run and the outboard not move? Or are you hearing the relays click and nothing else? The fluid should still be okay if it was okay before, but you might want to check that.

Does the battery have a full charge? Terminals connected tightly to the battery? Try switching the two trim relays in the box.

Re: Power Trim Problems

It's possible that a air block is trapped underneath the oil pump.

First, loosen the manual release valve and raise the unit to it full uppermost tilt position, tighten the release valve, check and fill the reservoir.

Now, apply 7 to 12 psi of air pressure to the reservoir. This will force the PTT fluid into the faulty areas to eliminate the air lock.

It may be necessary to release/tighten the manual release valve and drop the engine down to the trim position.

That should do it. Let us know the results.

Re: Power Trim Problems

I want to thank all of you for your suggestions. I am impressed at how quick you all responded to my problem. Unfortunately right now I can't try any of them as my boat is winterized and is out back getting burried with snow. As soon as the spring gets here I will definately try your suggestions. My motor is a 1988 Johnson. And I checked the battery and cables and they are all okay. I will let you know how I make out when the time comes. Thanks again, Bigfish
