I recently bought a 1984 90HP, J90MLCRD. To go with it, I'll be getting the OEM Service Manual covering all models for1984 containing 750+ pages. Will this be as good a reference as the smaller 1984 OEM model specific service manual? Thanks for any help.

You can't beat the OEM service manual for detail.

It really depends on how much you feel like searching.

With the smaller book, it will take less time to find what your looking for. Its all right there and you know its for your model

Either way your gonna get the same info.

Re: OEM Manuals - Model Specific vs All Models

I'm thinking that 1984 OEM service manual incorporated all models into one book instead of separate service manuals for specific models. The newer mauals will cover engines in a hp range.

When you get the manual, take a look at the index. It will have the book listed in sections and what hp(s) that section covers and what specific part of the engine...ie....fuel system, ignition system, gear case, etc. Kind of a pain but you will still get the OEM service.

At least if you get another 84' of a different hp.....you'll already have the manual....d:)

I have this exact manual for my 75hp. For some reason the HP specific manual was not available for this year. Worse yet is it cost about $70 I think and what you get is 750 loose pages... at least I did.

I greatly disliked the 1984,85 an 86 manuals.BUT they are the factory manuals, and the best out there.Older and newer manuals are HP specific.

I really am amazed that the aftermarket manuals are so vauge and yet sell so well.

Sometimes the generics will tell you how to get around the "special tools" called for in the OEM manuals. But finding what your looking for and being able to determine if the procedure in the generic manual is for your particular engine can be very frustrating.
