How big a job is this? My mechanic suggests the water pump in my 93' johnson 150 be replaced. The impeller is probably shot (at a minimum). The engine overheat alarm went off last time I had the boat out. This happened after I hit a sand bar at high speed. Tried to flush out the sand, but the overheat problem continues. There's some water discharge from the engine when I connect the ears, but maybe not enough for the top cylinders which are heating up the most. Mechanic suggests the job could take me-a beginner-4-8 hours, I may need at least one person to help me, and the job can be dangerous (weight of lower unit, possible need to turn drive shaft to make things fit back together, etc). If you suggest I take on the job, what's the best reference for doing this work?

Sounds like your mechanic was being straight with ya. The first time is intimidating but it is a do-it-yourself job. Since you got into some sand, I'd plan on replacing the housing along with the impeller. seloc or clymers manual (from iboats) should be sufficient for this job. oem shop manual is better though. tricky part IMHO is getting the shift rod reconnected.

You might want to ge the original OMC service manual before you tackle the job. Call Ken Cook Co. in Milwaukee and they will take your credit card over the phone and mail it out direct to you.

ON your motor you can split and remove the lower cowling pan so you can visualize the shift linkage connection.

You may have pumped the power head full of sand as well. When you have the lower unt off, remove the stat and backflush the system. If you don't want to buy a manual, check your local library as they often have aftermarket manuals that even though are not identical to your engine will at least give you an idea where things are.
