I just bought this motor a couple of days ago. Motor was re-built about 2 seasons ago and runs like a dream. Compression is around 140 per cylinder. The water pump and poppett valve were just replaced within the last 6 months.

I have always owned Johnson/Evinrude and never a Mercury. My only concern is the the "pee" stream coming from the telltale. It doesn't seem to be a firm stream like on an OMC but it does "pee" with not much force and "pees" in spurts. The motor runs great and runs cool. You can put your hand under the telltale discharge and it is lukewarm. I have also noticed that when you first crank it up, it takes about 20 seconds to start "peeing". Is this normal for a Mercury?

Thanks, just want to know some opinions

All normal. It takes awhile to fill the block, and the stream depends on the thermostats. Both can be closed, both can be open, and one can be open when the other is closed. Earlier models only peed when the thermostat(s) opened, but newer ones will pee weakly with both thermostats closed.

Thank you sir! I am just used to a Johnson/Evinrude which pee the same firm stream regardless of the t-stats. Will the stream even be the same at higher rpm's? It looked like it stayed the same to me. I need to get away from what OMC "pee" looks like and get used to Mercury8)
