I'm getting really tired of seeing a big empty hole where my dog should be sleeping. :( Thinking about bringing home a Bloodhound or two. Anybody have one? Anything good or bad to say about them?

I have no personal experience with blood hounds, but I have been around Redbone and Bluetick. Hounds, generally, have a reputation for being very even-tempered.

Yeah, that's what I've read, although Hoover was a Beagle/Basset Hound, and he was a killer. Probably more of a guard dog than most german shepards. :%

Howls from about 10 pm to 3 am almost every night.... probably not the dogs fault, he is tied up outside without any kind of shelter but that doesn't help me sleep either.

Some people are so stupid, they shouldn't be allowed to have pets. Tied up outside without shelter is cruel. Shoot the owner and give the dog to ZmOz:%

Try a shock collar for the barking. I haven't personally used one for that, but heard from those who have that it werks, and I have tried shock collars for disobedience (would go the other way when called) with great success.MOF, she still wears it outdoors, but i haven't had to use it anymore.
zapped her 4 times total, and she now comes when called every time.

I once had a bassett, but the dawg just "was not right".
It could not be left alone for longer than 10minutes before it would freak-out.
I'm not saying they're all vexed, but that one sure was.

No personal experience with them, ZmOz, but several members here seem to be married to one.8)

They are the kindest most gentle breed of dog one can think of. On the other side they can chit more than a horse, there bred for long term running, and they will eat to prepare for such a event.

Great dog's born with a huge desire to chase and hunt, dont let them............ it's almost like having a baby horse.
But the will luv your kids and you with never ending luv. And on the same note kill a chase like youve never seen, what is odd they never get it mixed up never. Dont ever worry about your kids.

Re: Anybody have a Bloodhound?

I have had short experience with one when we had to babysit my girl friend's mom 10 wks old puppy while she was vacationing in England for a week. He was very gentle and playfull dog but was hard to train. Peed and pooped all over the place. :| If you're going to get one, be prepare to pay for obedience training.

This is Allie, 8 wks old, I picked her up last Saturday. Sorry not a very good pic.

Re: Anybody have a Bloodhound?

Crunch, what you need to do is start calling your neighbor every night in the wee a.m. hours of the morning when the dog is howling and wake them up. Do this every night until they do something about it. Thats what I did and the neighbors finally took the hint and did something about it. If this doesnt get their attention call the law....most counties and cities have noise ordinances that covers barking dogs and have the law go beat on their door and have a little talk with them in the wee hours of the a.m. I expect that would get their attention if your calling them doesnt.

Save a nice dog from a local shelter, regardless of breed. It would be good for both of you...

Re: Anybody have a Bloodhound?

My last dog was a Foxhound mix from the shelter

Great dog BUT they live to smell and go brain dead when they get on a scent

Which makes training a challange :)

I always thought it would be cool to train one to play hiding go seek with the kids.

Re: Anybody have a Bloodhound?

if what you want is a really good dog thats good with people friendly and smart that learns really quick and a personality that you cant explain, get a bassette hound and youll never have a dull moment from laughing at him or enjoying him being around, i have A 4 month old bassette i got him at 9 weeks old he makes each day so interesting in the things he does but there smart in learning. my scooby doo as what i call him sits and lays down and catches food , understands when i say someone else has food for him hehehehee he takes off and barks at dad for food ,
heres some pics of him:

they do tend to bark alot for anything they want or need or be played with. and you cant hide human food from them for long there too smart drop on piece of food on the floor and they know and then want more by barking till you give in,

bath time can be fun untill they outgrow the sink

last of all is the best time and thats bed time hies like a teddy bear cuddles up with me and hies a pillow hog too or he likes it between my legs on top of the covers but most of all he snugles up with me on the pillow loves to be held, he has a way of getting more pillow space by licking my ear and making me move and then he does snore abit but its the dreams you have to whatch out for when he kicks his size 15 feet hell kick the shitout of ya leave a bruse or two on your chest, but they make it werth it in the end.
