Re: head gasket

I'm not sure if it's possible but can you use 2 gaskets? They might not seal to each other though.

I don't think you are going to find thicker head gaskets, and doubt double gaskets will last. But WHY are they shaving the block alot.If you heated it that bad,you must have alot of other damage. And who is doing this shaving?

I think you might be getting alot of misinformation from the shop doing the work.

Maybe they are shaving the head, instead? If it is too warped, you replace the head itself, not make it flat again.

Re: head gasket

I am along with my marine mechanic friend will be breaking the block down tuesday i brought it to him with the heads removed and the decking surface has some 3/4 by 1/2 wide by 1/8th deep pitting in the block this pitting is on the deck surface between the pistons he had mentioned he doubt it could be planned down that much and if it could be that i would need a thicker head gasket to compensate the difference right now it appears the pistons are flush to the deck so anymore material removed it seems that they would then be above the cylinder wall...the block will be going to a reputable builder after we break it down i was just asking some questions beforehand,,,im sure the shop will have the answers next week but im just really curios if i have to start looking for a block or just pick up a reman

Re: head gasket

If it were me, I would either find another block, or use this one on a core for a reman. You more than likely will not receive full credit for your block.

Re: head gasket

There is a sleeve that is made to repair the situation your describing.L.A.Sleeve makes a FLANGED sleeve.a machine shop can remove the old steel sleeve, cut down the alum.cyl.casting and replace it with a sleeve that leaves a new surface for gasket seal.
