Smoking Suzuki 150's

I am considering purchasing a boat with two Suzuki 150's that smoke a great deal when first started and until warmed up. Otherwise, the motors seem to run very well although a bit rough for an old inboard guy. A mechanic that worked on the boat reguarly said that the motors are in great shape and they do not have a great deal of hours on them. These are 1996 vintage EFI's and don't smoke under power.

Can anyone tell me if this smoking should be a concern?

I wouldn't worry about it too much, my 115 suzuki does exactly the same, my mech that works on it set the oil so it gets alot of oil at startup because of previous heating problems, maybe he did the same ...... afer the motor runs nice it doesn't smoke at all, only at startup .....

Re: Smoking Suzuki 150's

I just had my '87 Zuki DT150 SS worked on and when mechanic started it on muffs it was smoking a lot,, I asked same question, he said it was choked until it warmed up, but then I have carbs, so not the same, I'm just glad its running. Mine had a ground problem so I'm just happy its running.at all, but mine needs carb rebuild too, so not completely fixed yet.

Re: Smoking Suzuki 150's

both "mo-kane-ics" sound a bit fishy.
when the engine is shut down there is a fuel oilmix throught the engine crankcase. as the fuel evaporates it leaves the oil behind.
at the next start up cold the fuel oil mix is rather rich for a couple minutes until the incoming fuel can wash the excess oil through.
as EFI has no choke it really does not run very rich at start up.
so 2 strokes that smoke at cold start for a min or two is mostly normal.
occasionally we find a mis-adjusted pump rod or a failing pump seal that will add to the over rich oil mix at start up but usually there are a few other symptoms as well.

yep, i agree SM, especially when I had been trying to start mine with oil in gas, it probably had to "wash" out all the extra oil mixture I had put in the crancase too, now that you say that, it makes sense. And it did start to smooth out after a few minutes. I had him go thru the carbs since it had been sitting since I got it last summer without getting it started. Just wanted it worked on before the spring rush, so I can get it out when it warms up here in TN. All the problems I was having on mine was apparently the bad ground that I thought might have been a bad CDI or a sensor. I was relieved that it wasn't CDI, I would n have felt it was worth repair.
