Bad Trigger or Stator - how can you tell which one??

Hey folks,

I have a 1995 Marriner 150 and it started running very bad the other day. I pulled all 6 plugs and grounded them and noticed that only two (numbers 3 & 5) were sparking. All other plugs did not have any spark. I moved coils around, and found that they work well, as only plugs # 3 & 5 still fire and all others do not. So, is it my Trigger? Or could it be the Stator? If the Stator was out, would any plugs fire?? Any other suggestions? Shouls I get a new Trigger and just try it? Can you test these two items?

Thanks!

Paul C.

Stators effect cyls in groups of 3 or 6, trigger in groups of 2, if you have no meter switch trigger lead on the boxes. If you have a DVA or OHM meter we can give you spec to test

Thanks! So, if the Stator is in groups of 3 or 6, then it must be the Trigger since only 2 plugs got fire? Yes or no??

I do have a volt meter with resistance (OHMs) - how do I test. Oh another thing, could the Trigger go progressively bad, say over a few months? I was having related problems a few months back and thought it was bad gas or fouled pligs. Could a Trigger not work one monent, and go to working another - say after a cool down on from not being run for a couple of hours??

Thanks for your reply! Paul C.

PS: I went to school at Northeastern U in Boston.

Thanks! I'll take a look at it this weekend!

In answer to your question about intermittent operation, usually silicon dies and stays dead. Coils could operate differently as a function of environmental conditions if the problem is external....internal probably not unless heat related, then it has to get hot to act up.

Grounds however, can cause all sorts of funnies and if you have a corroded ground it just gets worse.
