I have 1996 J150EXEDB johnson ocean runner equipped with the fastrak trim system. My motor is going out on the unit and I also suspect a leak in the system and want to rebuild it. I have pulled the wires from the grommet and removed the upper pin, however, the lower pin will not budge. It will spin freely however I can not "punch" it out. Is there something I am missing, per the repair manual I dont see where I am missing a step. Any ideas greatly appreciated. Thank you,

Do you have the engine proped up taking the weight of the engine off the pin? If it spins freely, should drive right out.

Yes the engine is propped out, the upper pin is out, the motor is disconnected, both clips are removed from the lower pin, the unit is basically free swinging in that position. I will verify today if the pin is spinning, it may just be rotating a little when i jiggle the trim unit the few inches that it will move, I may have been incorrect about it spinning. It is starting to seem that it is just binded in..would heat help. I soaked it last night with penetrating oil, maybe this will help. Anything else? thanks again,

Usually they are froze up in the tilt unit. I've had some that just wouldn't come out. In those cases I hooked my hoist to the motor and took the mounting bracket off one side and slide the entire motor out of the other mounting bracket.

Re: Remove lower pin from Fastrak Trim system

Walker, it seems as if your idea may be the only way to get the unit off, the pin is not budging. Can you advise the steps to take to do this, and can it be done without a hoist? If not I will need to try to rent one. On the left bracket there is a groove that the motor seems to go into will this bracket slide over any once the bolts are removed without having to take the bracket off completely? It seems if i can get it over about an inch i should be able to pull it out. Any suggestions? Do you know where i might be able to rent a hoist? Leaving the right bracket on if i were to support with a floorjack and piece of 4.x8 or something do you think this may work just to help keep all the weight off the other bracket? I have both bolts off the left bracket now and the bolt for the anode and it doesnt seem like there is a whole lot of weight on that side. The right bracket and the trailering support seem to be supporting enough of the weight that i might possibly get by without the hoist, but I am not sure of all the steps to get that bracket off. I going to the manual now. Any information greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Remove lower pin from Fastrak Trim system

Just wanted to post an update in case anyone experiencing this same problem. I unbolted the right engine mounting bracket and loosened the steering cable that fastens the bracket to the engine. This will allow the bracket to slide over a couple inches allowing enough room for the trim unit to be pulled out, however, alot of the screws and bolts were stuck in the trim as well so after stripping a couple i decided the best thing was to replace the motor and filter and replace the seals i could get to. My problem is fixed as I dont believe I had a leak afterall, but the brushes in the motor were shot. If i have a problem with trim in the future i will have to replace the whole unit. In hopes of a new boat when this time comes. It was a fairly simple task though, removing the "right" bracket is the way as the left is a little more involved and I know from experience because I tried both. The right one will slide right over. No hoist needed just be careful to only slide it over enough to get unit out, anymore and you might damage the threads for the steering connections. Happy Boating!!
