Hello All,

Is there an aftermarket alternator for a 1960 Johnson 40Hp outboard? I mean I know all about the old generator, but is there a more modern "alternator" that you can install? I mean one that will charge your battery at less that 2000 rpm (I understand the generator won't charge less than that)? Thanks for your help all...

Nothing I've ever heard of, and I owned one for many years. My son still has a Gale that would use the same setup, and I do have a used generator that I will be installing on it before the next season. It's not much output, but a solar battery charger would at least help. But in the end, that battery is going to need to be charged every now and then. You can get chargers that mount in the boat so all you have to do is run an extension cord to it.

Here is the generator kit. It is a 10 amp DC generator which means that it only charges when running at over about 2000 RPM. The battery is only used for starting, unless you have other electrical accessories. 10 amps is plenty to handle the starting and maybe running lights or something. Don't even think about trying to keep up with a trolling motor.

What the heck is #21. An anode for the slot above the antiventilation plate maybe? I don't recall ever seeing such a thing.

As memory serves me ....... isn't # 21 a bracket that connected the generator bracket with the starter bracket ?

Can you use this in a two battery situation? One battery to run a electric trolling motor and one battery for starting the outboard. Or could you just hook up the charging curcuit to the trolling battery? Just curious, but yeah I know what you mean...no charging until 2000rmp...that is why I asked if there was an aftermarket alternator that would charge the battery at low rmp. I wonder if you could hook up a car alternator a certain way to charge it....hmmmmm. It would have to be a small alternator....what is the smallest alternator you can buy for a car?

The generator pushes the limits of space under the hood. I've seen some pretty small auto alternators, but none are small enough. As far as charging a trolling motor battery, it wouldn't do much. It takes a long time to charge a deep cycle battery and it can't be rushed. After one day of steady use, it takes two days to recharge. The several minutes to few hours any outboard runs in typical use is a drop in the bucket.

#21 is a "Guard",ring gear. The words on it are "Caution, Keep Hands Out".

Try a larger motorcycle dealership or repair shop. They make alternator conversion kits for older bikes with generators.

How long will a quality deep cycle battery last while trolling with a electric trolling motor?

If you gat the battery and charger that they use on golf carts, you will be happy.

I think the Trojan 30XHS deep cycle battery is rated at
225 minutes at 25 amps. These batteries are about the best at anywhere near reasonable prices. About $150 at
the local battery warehouse.130 amp hour rating.
Trolling motors are typically rated at 1 amp for each
1 lb. of thrust.Trolling motors with a maximizer run something like 30% longer.
To clearify the charging requirements It generally takes 2 hours charging time for each 1 hour run time.
By the way 6 Trojan 30XHS batteries used to be original equipment on the GEM electric cars.Absolutely the toughest application for a deep cycle battery.
It takes about 6 hours charge at about 10amps to charge the 6 batteries after a 1 hour run.
