I have a 1979 4 winns with a 140 hp mercruiser. The lower unit is trashed after it somehow got water in it. I found a boat with a 140 hp mercruiser but it is a 1988. The engine is bad and i would just want it to swap lower units. Is this possible with the year difference? How can i easily tell if they are the same? Please help!!

Re: Lower Unit

Yup! It is a direct, bolt on replacement.....:)
PS, You need to find out how it got water into it....
If the u- joint bellows are bad, it will happen again....;)

Sweet, thanks for the help, well the boat did half way sink, over the oil dipstick so it may have been from that. How can you tell if the u-joint bellows are bad?

Re: Lower Unit

You just need to see what the condition of the rubber is....
It shouldn't be overly "mushy".....
More than seven years is borrowed time, IMHO....
You will need to check your gimbal bearing for smoothness & if you deem that the bellows need replacement, then you should replace the lower shift cable at the same time......;)

Re: Lower Unit

This guy is only asking 500 for the boat, and it has a "new" battery. I havent found a better deal if it will fit. Everywhere i look though it says they should be the same. Thanks for the help!
