I was just wondering if there's a definition of an antique motor? Is anything defined or is it subjective? Maybe pre war? Pre Fibreglass hoods? Pre 50:1? Any comments on this? thx :)

Re: How old is an Antique?

Technically an Antique is supposed to be 100 years old. Most outboards aren't close to qualifying.I think
Ole Evinrude built a motor about 1908.
There are lots of motors called collectable.
Probably motors from the 40s, 50s and 60s have a pretty strong following.because the folks that grew up around that time now remember them from their youth.I'm 63 and motors from the 40s and 50s interest me most.Usually By the time you reach 40 to 60 years old you have the time and money to buy and use these trinkets. As each generation ages their interests affect the collecting hobby.

According to the Antique Outboard Motor Club Inc any motor manufactured in 1950 or earlier is classified as an antique. Motors built after 1950, but at least 30 years old are classified as classics.

You are way off! It's not 25 years, it's 57 years apparently! :) You'd think it would not be a fixed date but would be a rolling date like cars, like 50 years old or something. Cars btw I believe are 25 years old to be an antique. I was just interested in what folks thought. And I have just joined AOMCI so maybe it will come in my sign up docs! :) btw, is there any water in Sask?

As I understand it, although it is not a well defined line 1950 was chosen for antique status because it was more or less when alternate firing in-line twin gearshift motors came out and the old iron cylinder opposed engines were no longer made. There is friendly controversy within the club concerning what is a classic, but the bylaws say 1951 - forward to 30 years old.

F_R is correct as 1950 was considered a watershed year - the dawn of the "modern" outboard. The last of the opposed motors were phased out, remote gas tanks came into being as a regular feature, recoils were the rule, not the exception, and gearshifts became commonplace.

As time goes on, the date for antique may eventually change. Some think that it could be 1970 as that is "about" when electronic ignition became the across the board standard. Someday, future collectors may look at it as 2006, which was also a "watershed" year as the big switch was made from carbed 2-strokes to clean burners as mandated by law.

Tme will tell...
