Just bought this motor off ebay and I would like to know if the vendors claims are valid.

Evinrude 5 HP standard shaft, tiller control outboard. Twin cylinder, 164cc, 25KG heavy, seperate 3 gallon metal fuel tank and fuel line. It's about 10 years old but in really good condition as you can see from the photos, starts first/second pull every time and pumps water fine, runs at 50-1 oil mixture. It's the same motor as the 8HP and can be de-restricted but I didn't ever need the extra power, I don't think it's very hard to do though. If you look closely you may see a small tigger in the photos, he's not included in the sale, just there to add some colour. The motor has a safety pull cord on the tiller for man overboard emergencies and a stop button. This motor is ideal for small boats like tenders or fishing boats and benefits from an extra large propellor which gives it more thrust and plenty of astern action. Happy bidding.

the vendor claims that this engine can be deristricted to push out 8 hp is this correct? Also is this engine of 1995 vintage or older?

Will do when I get the thing home but I would have thought that most american sailors that are used to these OMC motors would know what I asked without tech specs....sorry for my error I will post the tech specs as soon as I have them:love:

It's not the tech specs it's the model and serial number. They made a lot of motors and it's impossible to answer the questions you posted without those number. Hey by the way I have an old Evinrude two of them actually in the garage what can you tell me about them. One's a 40 hp and one's a 6hp. ?

Re: Evinrude 5hp

Going by looks alone, the motor appears to be maybe a 1987 or 1988.

And no, you cannot remove a restrictor and convert it to an 8hp. The crankcases and intake manifolds are entirely different castings as the 5hp uses two intake reeds per cylinder and the 8hp uses three.

Re: Evinrude 5hp

Try some logic here. 5hp to 8hp is a 60% increase in power. Is it logical that only a restrictor can make that much difference?

We need the model number.

Hi Guys

I have the engine at home now and the serial number is BE5BFCUD....

Here is a link to the engine running in a barrel.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urcLvIz8wuQ

I noticed there is no water coming from the exhaust just water from the the tell tale.Is this normal in the newer engines or is my impeller pooped...

All advice appreciated

Re: Evinrude 5hp

Since this is a new to you motor, I'd replace the water pump impeller as you don't know the last time it was replaced. The last thing you need is to have an impeller arm break free and clog the cooling system. Normal maintenance would be to drain and replace the lower unit lube too. Parts are cheap and can be installed with common tools. Most motors don't wear out, they end up being destroyed thru neglect.

Re: Evinrude 5hp

Thanks for the replies guys I will do the maintenance as suggested.

I would also like to know the year of this motor I have had a look on the BRP parts finder and cannot find this model number. In fact according to BRP Rude didn,t start building a 5hp twin until 1995 prior to this they were 6 hp...

Also on the subject of restriction is this a restricted 8hp motor or is that just falicy...

Ty for your help

Re: Evinrude 5hp

Just found another motor on Ebay...this is a 7.5 hp but is also 164cc....this leads me to believe that my motor is indeed restricted....here is a part of the listing

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Re: Evinrude 5hp

I think that the motor may have been set up to meet regional or local horsepower restriction. Lake Springfield, for example, has a 6 HP limit.

The only way that I could think of to be sure of the differences would be by comparing the parts. The carburetor on the 6 might be the same as yours with different jetting, for instance.
