I notice oil comming from my 175 Johnson ob . The oil seems to be coming from the lower motor seal at the top of drive shaft . The motor was just rebuilt run's good and I am sure that's it's not good to run it with the lower oil seal leaking . How big of a job is this on a 2000 175 carb Johnson ? And why would this happen on a fresh rebuilt motor ? could it had been jarred in shipping ? wanted to get a little input before I contacted rebuilder . Thanks

If you are using break-in fuel (oil in the gas as well as injected oil) it may just be unburned excess oil Especially if you are taking it easy on RPMs for the first hours. The color of that oil should be like your 2-stroke oil, only blacker. If it's the same color as what's in the gearcase, that's more likely to be your source.

Yes it is the same color as my two stroke oil . And I am using double oil and low rpm so far . That oil seal on the bottom of the outboard wont stop the excess oil from coming out, does it allow air to be drawed in also ? Thanks

Are you saying the oil is dripping down the mid section of the motor or dripping out the gearcase at the rear?

Down the midsection , not the lower end ! right around the drive shaft and motor seal ! Thanks for the input

Could be a leaking base gasket, could be a cracked exhaust housing etc.

Is it unburned oil & gas or a burned exhaust type mix?

Seems to be unburned oil , could it be what willybwright said above post ? double gas mix for break in ? not only is it coming out the lower motor seal and drive shaft . I also see it some on the lower end where the water comes out or the small hole in the lower unit after I shut her off . Its two stroke oil not lower end oil .
Thanks

When I am standing at the back of the boat just look up under the engine , you can see the drive shaft spinning . no oil comes out when running but when it stops oil drips out of the seal and down the motor leg . Thats how I notice it . Thanks for the input

Are you speaking of the propeller shaft? The drive shaft is inside of the exhaust housing/midsection if the gearcase is on. -?

If it is off, how are you cooling the engine?

Hey found the problem , A carb was pouring gas out of it , The fuel was being dumped into the engine and leaking around the base of it . explains getting fuel from both ends all the black oil from exhaust and raw fuel around the base of the engine and down the leg . Rebuilt the carb and runs great . Thanks for the input !
