As some of you know,.. I bought a Riverhouse about a year,+ 1/2 ago,.....
Then bought the riverhouse nextdoor a year ago December.... This 1 is now Rented....
And,.....I'm still plugging away at doing a total Rehab on the original house....

Along with Raising the house Up about 12'/14',+ building a Steel Foundation under it,...
It has this Massive Poplar Tree(85'+),... Quite Healthy, but Still a Poplar,+ with Much(aka. Tons) Dead Wood in it's upper branches,.....

This 1st. picture is just After we took 2 Huge branchs Off the left-side of it,.... Imagine 2 30'+ branchs running horizonally towards the garge in the picture.... 1 just above the branch on the left,+ 1 just below the same branch...
f12892.jpg

Considing the Fact that this Tree is somewhat of a Local Landmark, that's the centerpiece of Postcards sold at the local Tourist Traps,.........
I've already been hearing that I should be Leaving It Alone...........'Course,.... This is from people who Don't have to Live, Under it......

In the last 6 weeks,..... I've removed the old concrete stairs that lead down to the waterfront, as they were Only 30" Wide,...Too tight to be moving All the Steel,+ Equipment down to the Work Zone..... It was bad enough trying to move the old Fridge, Stove,+ Woodstove Up the hill,... Had to Lift,+ Carry Everything......

Now I have a limestone driveway, from the street's edge, to the concrete at Water's Edge.......

Once the Driveway was In,+ I started moving Steel,+ Equipment down the hill,....
I called my Tree Service Buddy,........
Frank,+ Frank jr. showed up with their Bucket Truck, Chipper,+ Saws,.....
Unfortunately,........ Frank,+ Frank think that the ONLY Good Poplar is a Dead,+ Cut-up 1,....
And,.... My Love thinks that cutting down ANY tree, besides Her Christmas Tree, is a Sin against Mankind.......
Sooooo,....... Finding a Happy Medium was abit of a Challenge,.............
In the End,..... My Love still has Her tree,...alibet, somewhat Shorter.......
And,.....
Frank,+ Frank told me to NEVER Admit to AnyBody that They did the job for Me..............

I don't like to cut trees down, but when they become hazards, it's time for something to be done. The locals can complain if they want, but it's your tree to do with as you see fit. If they want it so bad, they can pay for the damage when the thing crushes the house or the garage...

Our last windstorm & the resultant damage loss of power to thousands has alot of people in this area looking at trees a little differently........
My neighbor just cut down two poplar....
I don't blame him....
Who wants a couple of tons of tree to fall on you or your house......:%

They grow like weeds, they are very dirty and when it's all said and done, they make lousy firewood. I'd say, off it. Besides Bondo, now that you have cut it's height, it is liable to grow out all goofy looking.

I had three of them on my back property line. My wife planted them from volunteers. They got so high and made such a mess in my neighbors yard, he begged us to at least trim them. In the end, we split the cost and cut them to the ground. Very glad to be rid of them.

Your safety should always come first, period. If you feel that the trimming has helped reduce-elimate the risk, then let it be, otherwise, down it comes.

Ayuh,........ The Risk,.... atleast for the next few years is Extremely Smaller.....

I guess I forgot the After picture,...........:/

Besides Bondo, now that you have cut it's height, it is liable to grow out all goofy looking.

Ayuh,..... I'm Counting on It......
That's why I had them leave so many Suckers growing.....

I see a ladder(cargo netting?) up the side near the backdoor of the house,.... Going up to where the Deck,+ Table will be in the lowest crotch on the left of the picture,... Sitting in the Seat, your back will be against the stem to the right in the picture.....
('course, Frank,+ Frank wanted to build this "Table", at 30" above Ground Level)

Remembering that the White house below it is going to be about 14' Higher than it is Now,..........
I see a Catwalk from the Then Upstairs backdoor leading directly to the "Morning, in the Sun, Coffee Table Deck"............

I'm Hoping to let it grow abit Funky, but keeping it Cut to Height, to provide Shade,+ Privacy to the dreamed of deck........ Before I even Started cutting on this tree, I did a Test Boring of the Main Stem, about 4' up, with a 5/16"x 24" drill bit,....... She seems to be Solid, No Rot,.... Atleast for the 2' that it would drill..... That,+ the fact that every Root Knee that comes to the surface of the lawn, Starts Growing a New Tree,..... I just cut 1 down that started Just Last Spring that was Over 10' High.....

Ayuh,....... She's a WEED alright,......
But I'm Still going to try to find a few Useful miles out of it.............

Btw,......
Just so you can better See My Visions,......
The Roof Ridgelines here run West/ Southwest, to East/ Northeast.......
In the picture, you're facing about West/ Northwest......

Bond-O
I thought so too, but I also did a lot of research after the fact,
if it is not your tree but falls on your property you are responsible, unless the tree was not maintained by the owner

looks like yours is surely properly maintained now.....;)
the insurance company's claimed my misfortune was an act of god, and that they would have covered it if the tree had been rotten

Bondo, you did the right thing. If any tree hugger complains do what I do..... buy a pair evergreen seedlings and give them to the tree hugger. It normally quiets them down when you replace a weed tree with a pair of useful ones.

Just like any other living thing, trees have life spans, and when they reach the end of that, they die.

Poplars have a particularly short life span compared to many other trees. And like other living things, when they die, they tend to fall over.

Re: Did I tell you about the Big Poplar Tree at My Riverhouse....

There's an enormous something or other tree (something rare, I can't remember) just up the road from me, supposedly planted by the guy they named this town after before all these houses were here. When they started building streets near it ~10 years ago, they actually went out of their way not to cut it down. Then some f#@&*$ yuppies moved in, and decided they were "in danger", which any reasonable person would not agree with. (including professional arborists) They planned to cut it down, and would not listen to reason from anybody. Then my neighbor, who works for the city, had the tree put on some historic landmark list. Now, if anything, they'll have to bulldoze the house if it's in the way of the tree. 8)

Man what a shame to hack up that tree like that. No wonder the guy that did it does not want anybody to know who he is. You might just as well cut it the rest of the way down. What is it with all the paranoia about big trees. Some of them have been here for hundreds of years. My house is surrounded by trees that are 100 feet tall or better, they were here before I got here, and will be here when I am dead and gone. You cant replace a big old tree like that. I see it all the time around here. People buy a wooded lot. Clear all of the great old trees and plant some crap trees that are not even native to the area. Never could figure that out. I'll bet that old poplar would have been there for another 75 years, with no problems. Oh well to each his own I guess

Up in Ontario, near here, there was the tallest White Pine tree in Ontario, some 300 years old, that was a legitimate tourist attraction. They spent countless millions of dollars creating a walkway to that tree, and trying to keep it healthy and alive.

About 5 years ago, it blew down.

So it goes!
