I have a 1984 Chris Craft Stinger, 32' long. Twin 454's. From my understanding and what I have been told is when that boat was sold back in the 80's, 2 different transmissions were offered in the boat with one being a best quality trans and the other not being as good. I was told I got the one that wasn't as good. Well one of the transmissions wont shift into reverse. I haven't been able to find anyone that knows what type of Transmission was in that year of boat and where I can get rebuild kits. I found some kits on the site but not sure if it suits my need because I have no clue what the name of the transmission is or part number. Does anyone have any insight on this?

Re: Transmissions.

I Don't,........

But,......
I've Never seen a Transmission or Anything Else that didn't have Some Sort of ID Tag, or #s, or Letters that are either Bolted To It, or Cast Into it........

Maybe alittle more Digging is in order on Your Part.......

Just knowing Who Marinized your Motor might lead to What your Tranny Is......

Good Luck,......

There are no nameplates, tags or ID's on it at all. I looked at them the last time we had both motors out of the boat. I've been told they are Borg Warner trans but not sure about it.

Re: Transmissions.

How about posting the engine serial #?
Or, contact Chris craft with the HIN ?
Or post a pic if you can.....
If you can post a pic I'm sure someone here will ID it...:)...JK

I contacted Chris Craft and this is what they told me....

Justin,

Records left to us by Murray Industries, the owner of Chris Craft at that time, indicate that all power options for these boats from 31 to 39 feet were Mercury. Therefore, you should contact your nearest Mercury Marine service center for guidance in this area.

Best wishes,

I guess i'll have to contact mercury.

Re: Transmissions.

Post the engine serial #......
Don S usually has access to the info for these type of questions....
I'm gonna guess & say it is most likely a B&W velvet drive.......:)

Re: Transmissions.

Well I don't know it off the top if my head. The boat is in another state where I used to live stored along with all the paper work.

Anyways, it's not VelvetDrive. I bought a number of rebuild kits before I realized it wasn't the same type of trans. Doh! >o

Re: Transmissions.

Like I said, I would guess velvet drive.....
It could be Hurth, though......
You should keep that (both) serial #'s handy for future reference when you are looking for parts.....;)
Another good reason is that a engine/drive package can be several years older than your hull.....
I don't know enough about your particular year/set-up to give you a definative answer....
Stick around, I'm sure there will be some that can shed more light on the subject than me.....
Welcome to iboats, btw.......:)

Re: Transmissions.

Ok. I know there TRS drives, but as for the Engine # i'm not sure. I will try to get out there asap and look. If anything I'll get the vin# for the boat.

Also thanks for you input so far. Well appreciated.

Re: Transmissions.

The only TRS transmissions used as far as I know was the BorgWarner (aka Velvet Drive) .
Here is a picture of one.

Re: Transmissions.

That's a MercTrans. A transmission built by Merc for Mercruiser not used on anything else. Sort of like the 470 engine.
I've never seen or heard of them being used with a 454, but I guess they did on your boat, unless someone changed engines.
