115 XTRD I added StarTron gas additive to fuel this time. I ran the boat for about an hour at all speeds shut down and fished for a good part of the day. When I started the motor up I noticed a lot of smoke I thought this was strange because the motor doesn’t smoke usually so on my way in I stopped and started a few time every time I get a lot of smoke I just started in the back yard after a week if sitting and it’s still smoking on start up. I have a Racor fuel filter I drain into a glass jar every fishing trip and have never found anything in the fuel. What can this be from?

Re: Lot of smoke

I’ve been using it since new about a year now. I always keep the oil tank full I’m also having a problem with the idle on this motor. It starts great but of course smokes, but idles nasty when I had it in for service they increased the throttle arm, this worked for a while but it’s not the fix. I’ve ordered a manual and hopefully it will get here soon.

Re: Lot of smoke

I was hoping I could just turn a screw and fix everything. I rebuilt a 63 Evinrude 18 hp Fastwin, and worked on a 15 hp merc that you gave me the best advice on “Get a manual ASAP”. Do you think the penz is gumming up? I run 87 oct should I run 93? In the future what is the best defense I fish once a week sometime twice. Hind site I put the Racor on well after this idle deal started. I have just been living with it. Hmmm rebuild carbs what else should I look at while I’m at it? I ordered a factory manual off e-bay.

Re: Lot of smoke

run 87, unless the manual says 89
u can download the owners manual form yami's web page

i would do carbs and plugs
it could be worn down mixture screws
u will never know until u open them up

where are u located also?

Tampa FL once I get the manual I’ll take a look at the carb break down and maybe get a better understanding of this motor.

Thanks I appreciate that. I work for the railroad so I keep crazy hours got to get my sleep when I can. I’m sure I’ll have questions but sometimes I can’t check the computer just a heads up. Thanks again.

Re: Lot of smoke

Okay I’ve got the manual, removed and cleaned both carbs reinstalled and did the link and sync, the motor stars, runs and idles so nice now better than ever. But I’m still getting a lot of smoke when I start it or run at low speeds. I’m going to check the sync and link again I’m curious about the number 1 cylinder. I think it’s the top right if you’re looking at the outboard from behind. I now think instead of burning oil it’s getting to much gas I’ve run the motor “with new plugs” and checked plugs and there always wet. I don’t have a gauge to install into the cylinder to measure TDC for piston. I used my calipers so maybe I was off a little or maybe I had the wrong cylinder. Any help is much appreciated.

Re: Lot of smoke

Ok, wow....you should find another service shop...is this a Yamaha dealer??? Your idle should have been set to 750(neutral and in water, 650 in gear). Why did you accept the 1100 when you got it back? And they don't know how to size a prop, whether it's stamped or not?? Run, don't walk, away to another shop. Do I read right that it was fine and when you got it back from service it was idled too low and you took it back and then it was 1100? Make them fix it, it's under warranty for God's sake....

Re: Lot of smoke

I’m still using the Pennzoil. I removed crabs again this morning to blow out air jets while at it I cleaned everything again. I double checked everything before start up and things look per service manual no adjustment needed. Well when i stared motor it runs bad just all over the place like the timing is off. I can’t figure out Control System Adjusting Ignition. Turn Flywheel to 25 BTDC. Not sure what BTDC is I see the 25 mark on fly wheel but I think I’m over looking something.

Re: Lot of smoke

Okay so after finding top dead center it says turn flywheel 3.91 mm then align timing plate with specified mark 25 before top dead center. How can this be the plate does not more that much?
