Howdy, RPA.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Whatever is wrong is affecting both magnetos. All that they share are the flywheel magnets and the cam on the crank that operates the points. That gives you an advantage in troubleshooting.

Ten years in storage is very likely to dry out the condensors. They are cheap enough. Replace both.

Examine the coils for cracks. Another dry-out possibility. No cracks? Probably good.

With an Ohmmeter, verify that the points are not grounded when open. Set them at .020" when fully open.

Good luck.:)

After 10 years sitting in a shed, I would clean the heck out of the points. Probably oxidized at this point. Dress them with a point file, or even use some 400 grit sandpaper folded over in itself... Then clean them with carb cleaner, lacquer thinner or denatured alcohol...

With your ohmmeter on low ohms scale capable of reading an ohm, connect to points with coil wire connected. Should read zero resistance with points closed and about an ohm with them open. If it doesn't, retry with the condenser lead disconnected. If it passes then, the condenser is shorted.

Hey pasqually. Go to the web and look up old-omc.de . In there is a photo-copied early '60's 5.5 hp Owners Manual. You will LOVE brousing through it. Full of great Info that applies to other engines as well.
