Use sealant for riser?

My Volvo-Penta manual says to use sealant on the gasket between the riser and the manifold. What type of sealant is best?

Also, should I use never-sieze or something similar on the manifold and riser bolts when I reassemble?

Thanks!

Re: Use sealant for riser?

Not sure about VP, but modern gaskets should not require sealer.....
How old is the manual you are using & is it OEM?....
As far as the bolts, I would use 'perfect seal' not 'anit-sieze.....
Again, I'm not a Volvo guy so I would wait for more feedback from those who are more familiar with your specific set-up....:)..JK

Thank you for the reply. The manual is a Seloc manual covering Volvo-Penta's from 1993-2002.

The manual is a Seloc manual

Ayuh,..........

There's the Problem Right There................... :%

Bill,.....
You should have nice Flat gasket Surfaces on the pieces,....
If that's the case,...... And you're using the newer Factory style Gaskets.....
Dry Gaskets are all that is needed..........

Look back thru the forum for a page or 2,....
Somewhere along the way, You'll see where Don has posted some Photos of What you are Looking For when Inspecting this Joint....
If you're Replacing everything with New,..... Disregard the last statement,....

Either Way,..... Just make sure that the Faces of the parts are nice,+ Clean,...Shiney Clean,.....Before you assemble them......

Re: Use sealant for riser?

Bond-o,
I am replacing with all new Volvo manifolds, Osco risers, gaskets (green in color), hoses, clamps, etc.

It will be expensive, however, I figure it's cheaper than a new engine and I won't need to do this again for a while!

So...no sealant with new hardware? Also, where can I find "perfect seal"?

No sealer ..just a gasket...it will state it right in the directions with the parts I think. Did mine last year. And got mine (complete, with elbows and rubber) off Fred Warner1 and Ebay for 450 shipped. See his feedback. .And I can't remember what I put on the bolts...probably just marine grease. Theres nothing there to seal, just keep corrosion at bay a bit.

As for the Bolts,.....
I usually slather them with whatever Grease is within reach,+ install them to about 35/ 45ft.lbs....
Never-Sieze would be a Good Choice,..... If it's within reach..... d:)

Looking in the NAPA catalog,....
It says "Perfect Seal" is equal to Sierra #18-9070.......

And,.....
Personally,.. I never really liked those green colored paper feeling gaskets,......
If it were Me,...... I'd probably slather them with that sealant,......
I like the black, composite type gaskets Myself........

Re: Use sealant for riser?

Volvo changed their riser gaskets a few years ago. The new gaskets are aluminum (I guess) and covered with some sort of teflon-type black coating. They state specifically not to use any sealant with them. You also have to be very careful not to even scratch the coating. They have two raised ridges that do the sealing. I used these gaskets when they first came out. I never trusted them much, so I checked them after one season. What I found is that they sealed just fine - but, since they seal only at the two raised ridges, in the very center of the gasket, they allow the rest of the sealing surface on the manifold and riser to corrode faster. For me it had only been one season, so all I had was discoloration. I didn't use them on my reinstall, I used the thick green rubbery ones that are probably just like yours. I use Permatex Hylomar sealant. No scraping to remove, watertight seal, and when I replace the gaskets, the sealing surfaces wipe clean and are still shiny. Most importantly, the entire sealing surface stays protected, not just the 1/8" in the middle...

Do you use the Permatex on the manifold gaskets as well or just the risers? My manifold gaskets are green too!

Thanks!

Re: Use sealant for riser?

I didn't use any sealant on the exhaust manifold gaskets, per the procedure in my workshop manual.

BTW, Seloc manuals are unbelievably poor when compared to the Volvo service manuals. you should really think about geting the Volvo Engine and Stern Drive manuals for whatever model you have. They're really worth it...

When I put my new OSCO mainfolds and risers on, the instructions from OSCO said NO SEALANT on the gaskets.

dont use sealant , i made that mistake last year on my old aq270 and hydro locked the engine twice, had to use new gaskets and new risers in the end and had the hassle of doing it a couple of times over.

They did not make a direct replacement. Which is why someone else has a pair of GLM's that I originally bought, that someone else on (won't mention forum here) said would work.
GLM's would not clear the front Selectrim ram. Other than that, they would have been usable. 8)

Re: Use sealant for riser?

Replaced manifolds and risers this weekend and everything turned out great!

The engine has always been flushed after use and has always been sprayed down after use. The bolts and nuts were rustfree and came out without much effort.

I (and a helper) got both sides changed out in 3 hours!

The manifolds were original but looked very good. I think I'll have them cleaned and keep them as spares.

To answer my own original question...I did NOT use any sealant other than the supplied gasket.

I have to admit that I am still limping around. I haven't been this sore in years!

Thank you for all the advice!
