just picked up a 25 hp sea king. it had been sitting in someones backyard for more than a year. It took two hours of pulling that damn thing to get it started. Now i can start it on the first pull but it smokes alot, it also backfires untill it gets warmed up. Please help, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank you.
MODEL # GG8834A
SERIAL# 06x784418

1960 25Hp. Back then, you added a quart of SAE-30 oil to the gas tank. Today you can mix 50:1 with any 2-stroke outboard oil (a pint per 6 gal). I have one myself and have been running that ratio since I got it back in the 80s. Certain oil brands smoke less than others. ( Actually I run it a tad rich, 1 pint to 5 gal for the first tank each year, then 5-1/2 gal after. )

It's probably lean-popping when cold, not backfiring. It kinda sounds like a sneeze. You might be able to get rid of it by richening the idle by 1/8 to 1/4 turn, but it's not unusual for a few sneezes when cold.

Its not unusual for a motor especially one that hasn't run in a while to appear to smoke a lot in a test tank.
Careful adjustment of the mixture screws may help some. You can't do the high speed screw correctly in a tank.
Another possibility for smoke is a bad pump diaphram.
According to my specs the Sea king doesn't have roller bearings on the piston pin. This would give me second thoughts about 50:1 unless someone like Joe Reeves
said no roller bearings is ok.I know the little 6hp is similar and according to some is prone to failure at the factory prescribed 50:1.Some folks run 40:1 or 32:1.

thanks admiral i took your advice and my engine is running real nice, not smoking as much. my next question is who is the maker of this 25 sea king? I believe its gale, but im not certain. I also got new spark plugs and am wondering the proper specs for the gap?

It's a Gale, very similar to a Johnson/Evinrude. Probably the same internals and greacase with different blocks and midsection. Gales were made in Galesburg, IL and Johnyrudes were made in Waukegan. .030 plug gap, .020 points gap.

thanks a million. I cant wait to gap them accordingly a make this old girl purr like a kitten. I think its great that you know so much about motors and you share your knowledge with people like myself. thanks again and "tight lines to you."

Nobody should ever pull on any OMC motor for two hours! That will:

1 Self administer a coronary stress test, or

2 Give you a heart attack

3 Wear out the recoil starter.

If it isn't running in 5 pulls or less, something is wrong. Stop pulling and find out what's wrong. 90% of the time on motors of that vintage, the something wrong is dried out, brittle, cracked coils. If they haven't already been replaced, they need to be. They are notorious for that.

Among other things, all that cranking has dumped a bunch of raw gas and oil into the exhaust housing. When you finally got it started, the oil burned out of the exhaust and made mucho smoke. But it kills all the mosquitos for miles around.

Just a note: Run that at 24:1 if you want it to last. That twin will last forever if you keep the fuel mix at 24:1. If you try to run it at 50:1, you'll ruin the bearings and have a pile of junk.

Seriously!
