Carb Cleaning Advice & Plugs Question

The winter before last I think I left some gas in the engine. I used it one time in the winter but basically it sat from september to Feb. 1. Consequently, idle is now a little rougher, and starting takes a little longer.

Can I take the carb off and submerge in carb cleaner as 1 big piece (assuming I removed the noise cover, etc.) , or should i take apart and then soak?

Also, the plugs listed in the manual as Champion QL78V. I think I looked before and that number plug was no longer made. Anybody know what the right one these days would be or the best one you would recommend?

It's on a 1983 Johnson 115.

Thanks,
SM

Re: Carb Cleaning Advice & Plugs Question

Need to tear the carbs down to clean them right.
I'm sure that plug is still made. If you can't find it then go with QL77JC4. I think its a better plug for those V4's anyway.

I'd take it apart. There is no way you could get all of the air out to where the cleaner would reach all parts. Also, the dip method is not good on any plastic parts so make sure you get all of those off.

While taking the carb off and doing a rebuild is the way to go.I'd give it a try with some carb treatment in the tank.Worst that will happen is you will have to do a rebuild later.

one question...is the gas you are using 6 months old too?
if so get new gas b4 tearing things apart.
6 months is not a long time to store an engine with fuel in it.
6 months is beyond the limit of storing gas even if the gas has been treated.
