My recoil rope after I pull it...returns real slow. Is there any thing I can do to help my situation.

you can first try spraying some wd40 with the straw up into it. if the doesn't work you need to remove it carefully, so you don't release the spring. and lubricate it.

Usually it would be lubed with a light grease but Use WD40 it will soften the old grease and it should recoil better.Spring should be fine.

You can patch/fix most things, but trying to loosen up old grease ?

Pull it off the side of the motor, take it all apart, clean out all the old grease.

Reassemble (with new grease) and you are ready for another 35 years.

Just DO NOT remove that center bolt, or that spring will come out and unravel

If you want to disassemble the mechanism, one safe way is to (of course, take the rubber handle off the end of the cord & pull it back through the hole) before removing the winder from the motor, tie another small cord/string to the winder cord, and slowly allow the spring to unwind as far as possible. When you re-assemble, after cleaning, in order to tighten the spring: put it all together, put it on the motor, and then pull the cord all the way out (hold the arm down/forward so it won't engage the flywheel), jam the winder (maybe 2 small c-clamps around the outside) so it won't wind back up, and then wrap the cord you've pulled out back around in the track (thread it through the restrictions). (If you need to restrain the re-winding temporarily, without using a jamming method (c-clamps, etc), you can just put vice-grips (gently) on the cord so it will stop at the mechanism.) Wrap the cord back on a couple of more turns if needed. You should be able to tell how much to tighten it so that when you thread the cord through the front hole and attach the handle, it will have a good pull inward.

If you have the OMC manual it isn't that much of a job to remove the spring, clean it, grease it and put it back together. Don't wear your good clothes as you will ruin them. I can't see how you could grease it right without removing it. I had a problem with mine not quite rewinding all the way in. Drove me nuts. If I left the mounting bolt a little loose it would work but didn't want to leave the bolt loose. I removed and re-inspected many times and then one day my brain kicked in. I let off some of the spring tension and it has worked well ever since. Best of luck but use a manual. Rick.
