Those things show up on e-bay all the time. In fact there are a couple of them right now. One looks real good and has the second gear/shaft which you will need. You can go to "http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E" without the quotation marks and see what it is supposed to look like. The same handle was used on a whole bunch of different Johnson Evinrude and Gale 33, 35 and 40hp motors from the 1950's up to yours.

I just tried it and it works for me. Copy and paste it into your browser's address field but don't include the quotation marks.

The nice one that I was looking at on e-bay this morning has disappeared. The other one is item # 250082070962. Just do a search on that number. Note that it doesn't have the short gear/shaft that goes back from the tiller to the other gear.

If you don't have any other luck, go to the antique outboard motor club website and post a free want ad on their Webvertize page. www.aomci.org

40hp on a 12 footer? Can I watch? I have 25hp on a 14 footer, and with the Cav fin cranked all the way over (yeah, the right way), it wants to rip my arm off...even with a tiller extension for better control. I think the touque will have you screaming, and the boat going in circles!

Hey, I didn't notice that. 40hp does sound a tad overpowered, huh? I sure do hope he uses a kill switch. And a life jacket. And a helmet.
