I had my boat in Lake Erie last season, Port Bruce is the place. For those that dont know it, it's 15 miles east of Port Stanley, or right across from Ohio. I loved it because it was quiet, but half the time i couldn't go out because there were 6foot waves.
I was thinking about trying Port Franks on Lake Huron next season, being deeper, would that mean it's not as wavey? Anyone ever been there, some input would be appreciated.

Usually, when you stick to the west end of these lakes it is quiet.
Increased depth will only cause larger waves when you get close to any shallows.
Remember the Patrick Fitzgerald.

Hey Bandit

Lake Huron can be as cantankerous as Erie and then some. The predominant westerly winds blowing across the open expanse of the lake (fetch) can cause some large big waves (mostly rollers till they break)! Lake St. Clair is a much calmer lake but with the traffic from the Detroit & St. Clair rivers it's very busy in the summer. Anywhere you can find the lee shore on a lake boating should be better. I don't know what the west end of Erie is like for boating. Have you checked out the west end of lake Ontario yet? I'd prefer southern Georgian Bay myself. Midlland/Penetang is a boaters heaven, but busy too. There's the 30,000 Islands of GB to get lost in and a pilgrimage to the North Channel is a must!

Safe boating.

Port Franks can be quite nasty with a north or northwest wind, south wind is usually ok. I chose Sarnia. Not too many days I can't go out. If the wind is south, we go on the lake. Northwind, we go down the river. It can be busy, but it is a big river and lots of places to go. If you decide on Sarnia, make sure to get what you need for the U.S. Doubles your places to go.

Ideally I would like Georgian bay, but I'm not driving 2-3 hours each way. I once wisited Trent Severn Boat Haven, if it wasn't so darn far away I'd call it home.

I agree with the north area, but like you, I don't want to spend half my weekend driving. And I don't want to spend my weekends tied to the dock because the lake is too rough. I docked in Port Franks one season, and while it is nice there, I found too many days, that I was stuck in the river.

I just might have to go with Port Stanley then, I just hate going by all the fishing boats, I'm not much for rotting fish smell

I would really like to have some place where even if we cant go out, we could at least take the kids swimming.

I'm not from Ontario but used to boat in Georgian Bay a lot. It can get REAL ugly a lot of the time. We launched in 12 mile bay near Mactier(sp) and would go down the bay and into the edge of Georgian Bay and back into a smaller bay. Many times that trip into the edge of Georgian Bay would be a serious pucker factor. It is to bad it is so far for you drive because the 1000 island area is perfect for family boating good or bad weather.

Have you tried Lake Simcoe? It's about two Hours from London. Simcoe has several islands to hide behind when the wind blows, lots of cabin cruisers.
