They are all Chevy engine, it's all the other stuff that makes them Mercruiser. They Thunderbolt ignition, the Mercruiser manifolds and risers, the brackets for alternators, ignition parts, tstat housing, heat tube to manifold is all Mercruiser.

I should have said Automotive Chevy. I am not putting anything past the prior owner. I sure hope I can find that tag you asking about. I have yet to be able to spot an Automotive Transplant.

Lyndy: There is some metal missing from the Elbow. Should that be a concern?

Don S: Where and how much?

Around the edge of the elbow just aft of the Port Riser.

That is nothing to be concerned with.....;)

Looks like we are darn near neighbors! I live and work in San Fernando Valley

Chatsworth here!

Work in Chatsworth and live in Tarzana

Wow Lyndy, I grew up on Avenida Oriente. Went to Taft Hi. Still have a good friend who lives up on the hill, above Reseda Blvd. My wife lived in Marina Del Rey when I met her.

Was down last June to show the kids where they were born and make the rounds in the Valley.

Might look just above the starter and see if there is a metal tag with the Mercruiser SN on it. If you can get that number, I can tell you year and model of the engine.

The only number I found near the Starter was on the Flywheel housing. This may be a Casting Number. The whole area is kinda tough to look at. I looked around the Internet for the possibilty of a picture but only got areas to look for it. If this does nothing to Identify the actual Engine, I will continue to look.

It's a small brass plate riveted to the block. The SN is stamped into it.

PS: A trick I learned on those hard to see areas, is to stick those small digital camera in there and take a picture. You would be surprised what you can see.

Thank You Don. It is much easier to know where it should be while looking for it. Camera will be there with me also.

Hi all,

very interesting what you guys are writing about. I just replaced my engine and seems like I'm having exaust issues so this thread will help me go through my manifolds and see the condition they are in. BTW, I live in Granada Hills (very close to Northridge).

Good luck on your motor. It does not look bad at all. Have you checked the piston compression?

Hi mochosla,

Live In Tarzana, Work in Chatsworth and my boat is Dry Storage in Marina Del Rey. I have no questions about the Engine. Took it out on a good Sea Trial. Checking the Risers at the suggestion of one of the Senior Members of this board. Just started checking out the Engine because I am starting the finish on my refurb of my Sterndrive and taking notes for the this project and the boat's electrical. Hope to hear more from you on this board. Welcome to Iboats!

Good and bad news I guess. The Rivots are right where you described they would be, but the ID plate is gone.

Looks like my luck is continuing as usual. Thanks for the guidance Don.
