You can get a gauge for the dash (or the engine compartment) and just hook one side to negative (black) and one to key-on positive (purple). Or you can get a digital model from MerCruiser. It has a permanent battery and a sense wire that wraps around a plug wire. The nice thing about the MerCruiser option is that it only ticks when the motor is running. Leaving the key on by accident doesn't add time. It works on any motor with a sparkplug. You could put one on a chainsaw.

Thanks J, but I'm looking to mount it in the dash. I have a spare spot there that is round.

Actually that looks pretty much like the MerCruiser one. I'll bet they make it for them.
