water comming over transom when I come off plane

I have 15.5 tri-hull bass boat with a '78 Johnson 85hp 19P SS prop. When I come off plane, the wake catches up to the boat and a significant amount of water splashes up over the transom all the way onto my rear deck. I have just been giving it a little push after I come off just to "out run" the wake and keep it from comming over but I was wondering if there is something wrong in my set up that causes this (load, motor height, prop)? A buddy of mine has a 18' Nitro w/150 that did this until he put a hydro foil on it...then it stopped. I already have Doel Fins so I can't try adding that...are the fins just a band aid for something that needs to be adjusted? Thanks

I think thats the nature of the beast. My bass boat does it too. I just ease of plane and goose it just when the wake catches up to me.

those short transom boats are going to do that, there is no true cure. you could try moving some batteries to the middle of the boat, but that's about all. if you are running full throttle, and just cut back to nothing, you're going to get swamped. cut you throttle back slowly. learn you boat. there is no reason to take water over the stearn, in a properly operated boat.

.......and for god's sake, don't cut the throttle in a tight turn, you will sink in a flash.

Just a quick question...What are Doel fins? If they are the polycarbonate pieces that fit on the transom to prevent water from splashing over it. Where can I buy these?

Doelfins are mounted on the engine anti-ventilation plate to help get the boat on plane with under-powered boats. It will not help with hard slow downs.... it will not prevent water from comming over the transom.

sask... what you're thinking of are called "wave whackers"... popular with walleye fishers who backtroll.

sorry, I was affraid of that but I wasn't sure what other category would be more appropriate...since I thought that engine height/rigging might apply I put it in an engine category. Thanks for keeping the boards organized for all of usd :)

Is your hull rated to carry the 85 hp? That V4 has got to be a lot of weight for a 15'er.

My 14' Ebbtide tri-hull bass boat used to do it too. It had a 50 HP Mercury which was well within what the boat was rated for but thankfully the boat had a decent splash well which handled the "wave" without letting any water into the boat.

tasha'sdaddy is correct with his advice. Learn the boat and slow down more gradually to lessen or eliminate the effect.
