hi all i am still waiting for my local dealer to get my boat in to r+r my boat with new rebuit 5.7. i have . new manifolds and risers. water pump. figure i need starter, carb rebuild etc..am getting tired of the wait it's been thier almost 2 month's sitting it was a winter project. but it's going on march, they are going to yank motor and give me a price. to reinstall my egine that i got. the whole idea for me to get dealer to install it was to get my 2yr warrantee by company that states 2yrs. parts and labor if dealer installs.. but now i am getting inpatient. i live in phila. and idea's..i was thinking to give them 2 more weeks after that i can do it my self and hell with the 2 yr watt. it comes with 1 yr. watt. on engine only. the whole idea was to save money over the winter but soon its getting into the season.
any idea's what a reg . shop gets for and r+ r not counting parts hoses etc. just labor. does anyone know of a good shop near phila. i just am tire of doing the brute work as i get older. i has this good idea but it dont look so good now.

I know most shops get 60 to 75 an hour.I'm not sure how many hours are involved in the engine swap.
Bad thing is like you said. The busy season is a few weeks away and your boat may be put to the side while they do all the de-winterization of others boats.
Good luck Bob..

If it makes it through the first year, it will make it through the second.....
You could be done with it in the two weeks you are willing to wait.....
Do it yourself & use the money you saved for gas...
Just pay close attention to the alignment.....:)

You may not be high on the "next to do list" if you brought in your own parts.Think about it.Their shop rate is figured out to make a profit.and that includes the profit on parts.sort of like bringing eggs to a diner,or a steak to OutBack.

But they should have told you up front.

Same thing with warranty work.If you buy your boat across town, and bring it elsewhere for warranty problems, they are bound by their franchise to fix it.But they can put a whole lot of their own customers before you.

Hate to say it ........ just a fact of life.

If the interior is removed to the point that it will not interfere with the r&r, It takes me about 6-8 hours to r&r a longblock and swap out the needed parts, and I am no mechanic. I have just done it a couple of times. First time took longer. That is on an 18 foot deep V, 350V8, volvo 280 leg. Hope that helps.

When I had mine done 3 years ago, before I knew enough to do it myself, the labor was ~$2000. And I have an easy to get to / work on engine.<p>

What do you mean the season's getting close? Your highest temperature forcast for the next 10 days is 45&deg! If you were down here, I could see it...it's 70&deg and sunny today... ;)

If you have an a-frame or equiv and can lift the motor over the boat, do the job yourself. Pulling a sbc out of a boat is generally easier than on a car. Take pics of every single thing you disconnect and you won't have any problem hooking it back up. If you are swapping identical motors, exhaust, etc. it's a piece of cake. Just make sure you hook up all your ground wires and make sure that your engine is aligned properly.

A two year warranty on a motor is no better than a one year. If it breaks in the second year, something else rather than defective engine parts caused the problem and it probably wouldn't be covered anyways.

Besides, no offense against any good mechanics out there, I know there's a lot of them, but it's a whole lot easier to take the time to do the job right yourself than find a good mechanic. Just like doctors and lawyers, you have to weed through a lot of incompetence to find someone who knows what they are doing and will take the time to do it right.

Also, you can buy a whole lot of gas, bait, beer and other toys for your boat for what the shop will charge you.

thanks guy's i have to disagree with DHPMARINE. i understand where you are coming from but. as i worked for car dealer for 15 yrs.
i asked him before i brought the boat what he thought. he say nice hull design. i asked him would it be smart to buy motor and have him out it in.he said yes. he asked me to wait a couple of months to shop is slow i did. he still has boat sitting. he and i knew what was what going in...i am not worried about the labor. i am worried about the boat sitting another month. and then it's april and no work done...THE OLD SAYING IS CORRECT. if you want something bad. do it your self. i have worked on cars all my life. never engine for $$$ i just wanted to get him to hit me with $$$ labor carb rebuild. starter etc..,money was not the big object. fixing it myself was...i will figure it out. by next week if its not in shop . end of the week . i will build the long block i have with manifolds. get carb redone. buy new starter hoses belts . and do it myself..gas money like you guy's said. they say its going to $3 again soon

delsol, I hear ya. Sometimes you just don't have the time and or energy to fool around and just want to pay someone else to do it for you. It might be a good idea just to go to the guy you gave your boat to and express your concerns face to face. Ask him if it is possible to start ASAP and get a date and estimate from him. Be nice but businesslike. If you don't get the answers you want just tell him that you are sorry and have decided to do the work yourself.
I likely don't have to tell you this...If you do the work yourself get a good manual and tag everything as you take it off(especially the wiring) and take digital photos as well.
BTW what type of outdrive is on the boat?
