Evinrude 200HO 2003 model

HI there,
I am new and quite ignorant about boats and motors.
I am writing on behalf of my husband.
We are about to buy a Evinrude 200HO 2003 model
but we heard that in the past this model had troubles regarding the gear box and it would be better to take it for a service.....
To us it seems in pretty good conditions....
Anyone who knows about it?
Any place where I can see some riviews of this model and some compliances?

Let me start by saying I have no knowlege about that motor,but if you answer a few questions,maybe we can help.

Are you buying just the motor,or does a boat come with it? If it comes with a boat,or you can lake test it before the purchase,you at least can see how it operates.

If it's not a dealer selling it,but an individual,have it checked out by a dealer.

Also look at the lower unit (gear box) and see if it looks mismatched to the rest of the outboard (indication of service work).

You can also post the serial number,and someone may be able to access the warranty records.

Generally speaking,it's 4 years old,and if it runs well,I would think any problems are corrected.

i reply to you but i think that later my husband will do it as well
we are buying boat and motor from an individual!
everything is in a perfect shape...unbelievable and....if my husband says that....he is very precise when comes to boats....
we tried the motor ...but not in the water
went on stright away...good sound...
everything inside the boat, included the gear box looks spotless and the owner told us that before the purchase he will give us the receipts of the last service and there is no problems
he seems a very nice person and , considering the way he keeps the boat, i think there will not be problem
but of course...as a friend told to my husband about that problem...now it is bugging him....
probably he will answer back later to get more info from you guys

OK,just be careful.

I've known lot's of people who bought newer boats from the most honest guys.Often the owner doesn't realize his boat had problems before he sold it.

Would you buy an airplane on the tarmac ?

Don't buy a boat on a trailer.

the evinrude will be on the back of a Ring 20ft sports boat.. from what i have heard, they had alot of problems with the gearboxes and the 200HO is not designed to be mounted on heavy boats.. has anyone had trouble with the gearboxes here
