Hey all,

I just purchased a 1978 V6 1500 (Serial #5107980) which was mounted on a 1983 Skeeter SF-160. Both boat and motor are in questionable condition, but I'm wondering what I necessarily should do with this motor before trying to run it. Given that I have no idea how long it's been sitting (the person I purchased it from had owned it about a year but never ran it) I have no idea what sort of condition it's really in. There was gas in the tank which I'm sure is about worthless and when I tried to prime the bulb gas just poured out of the carbs. So I'm guessing I'll need to either rebuild those or at least take them down and clean them up properly. I've got a factory repair manual and parts manual on order which should be here shortly. I've also ordered a new water pump assembly just to make sure I cover my bases. I'll also be ordering new thermostats as that seems to be a common suggestion here.

Should I do a compression check on everything before proceeding? What about spraying SeaFoam into the cylinders to loosen things up before cranking her over too much?

I suspect this thing is salvagable but certainly don't want to throw a rod or burn up the engine because I don't take proper precautions. Any suggestions will certainly help me out. I'm mechanically inclined but not so much with outboards. However, this site is a wealth of information and I've been reading over posts pretty religiously for the last week to make sure I cover my bases.

Thanks

Change the gear lube, prelube the engine I like marvel oil use what ever you choose any thing is better than nothing. Clean the carbs and rebuild the fuel pump apone start up watch for water flow from the telltale if none, you will have to repair the w/pump if it runs then repair the pump anyway before trying to use it on the water

Thanks Laddies I'll do as you suggest. Right now I'm just waiting on my repair manual so I do everything the right way. I'll try to keep you all posted as I progress, but it could take awhile with my schedule.
