Re: Lake Michigan

that on a lake is insane :^ we only see waves like that in the bay and thats only if there is a storm

this may sound like a stupid question but how on earth can you get waves that big on a lake

Re: Lake Michigan

I have seen 10+ footers on Erie. I have seen Michigan worse than those pics, its just they looked so cool with the bridge and the factory in the background in that haze of light snow.

Bond-o, I believe at that time the winds were 30mph or so. I think the strong gust was 40+.

jimlad, though not oceans, these lakes have A TON of surface area on them. Many a ship has gone down in them..........the Edmund Fitzgerald being the most famous.

Being on the Beaches of the East-end,...

The Prevailing Westerly Wind has a Clear Shot for the Whole 200 Miles, of water several hundred feet Deep......

The Last Mile the bottom comes Up to the beaches rather Quickly,......

In a Severe Winter Storm,...... Ya know, 1 of those 1 in 20 years kinda Storms,....

20fters Smashing against the Ice Flows is Pretty Awesome........

'ell,..... I've been caught in T-storms, 20 miles out, that blew up 10fters,.....
That's Alot Less Fun than watching from Shore.........
All I could do was turn,+ Run With them.....
Luckily,.... That's also the direction Home....

The scariest part is when boats around you "disappear" when you go in to the trough of a wave......

The cool thing is the other 2 days I was on Erie I would have been 100% comfortable being out there in a 15fter. That last day was rough, that night was one of the best lightning shows I have EVER seen. Good oe shallow Lake Erie.8)

Re: Lake Michigan

Pony, those look like they were taken near the art museum.
If so, that is inside the harbor, inside the breakwater.

I've been out there in some real rough stuff.
I remember one time we took a 33' sailboat out at 8 am.
There was no wind, but it had been blowing for 2 day from the NE.
The front passed and the winds went calm, but the waves lived on.

Imagine my shock when we left the harbor, hit the first swell, fell into the trough, and saw nothing but water in all directions.
This is on a 33'er, and those waves just swallowed us up.
We tooled around for 30 minutes, busting waves, till one of the guys got sick. It was pretty cool to drive right into those big waves, and have them crash over the deck.

Yup very near the art museum......and very much inside the breakwall. I would love to see what it was like outside of it.

I hear lots of stories about my dad and him getting stuck out there in a Tornado Warning in a boat with an in-operational motor........Never did take that boat out there again, and he sold all of his down riggers and rod holders etc.

Hey Jimlad, If you look at the actual size of those lakes n' the proximity to each other, n' the fact that they are in the interior of a contenent; that: is a prescription for some real nasty stuff. The ol' Edmond Fitzgerald was a large ship n' the waves were so big they speculate that the bow may have scraped the bottom, (which was still deep enough for navagation). Very nasty on some o' those real big puddles. JR

i am honestly still in awe that large lakes can produce such enormous waves

Re: Lake Michigan

Edmund Fitzgerald went down in about 450' of water. The boat was (I think) 660' long. Most spec. I have seen is that she either crested a wave and broke in half or got up on two waves and broke. Waves were 30' to 40' at the time if memory serves.:^ Sorry about the hijack Pony! :$
ps its wierd to think in 450' of water that if the boat stood up you could just walk off.
