85 or 86 Mercury 150 running strong but no water coming out of peehole. Just thought I would post before dragging the boat to the mechanic. any input or suggestions would be appreciated.

Ck the pitot tube and the hose coming from the thermostats as long as the engine is not overheating

You can run a piece of weedeater line up the tube, might unclog the line if something is in there. When was the last time the impeller was replaced?

Thanks for the input. The impeller was replaced last year with a used one. I'm gonna try to unclog the tube with a line like suggested before I take it back.

Might trace the tubing back also and see where it originates. Some come from the exhaust manifold water jacket wherein they should squirt as soon as the impeller fills up the powerhead with water......which can take a minute or so....eternity when you are waiting for it to come out :% .

Others come from the output of the stats which are plumed in series wherein the stat has to open before you get water.

Son's '95 150 was plumbed from the stats. We re-routed the plumbing so that it peed as long as the powerhead was full of water. Figured if the stats were a problem, the overheat buzzer would tell us.

Last time I bought an impeller it was in the range of $10. Why would you replace it with a used one......considering how important it is and the pain it is to replace?

I was just curious. How were able to re-route the pee hose? I have a 1992 200 offshore and I hate the way it pees. It has a new water pump, t-stats, and engine temp is good but the pee is not very strong. I am planning to install a temp gauge anyway. Where could I re-route the hose to get a stronger pee. Thanks

Re: water not coming out of peehole

Not to hijack the post, but would a restricted tell tale passage cause an overheat condition? Experiencing similar problems w/2001 Mercury 115hp 2 stroke Saltwater. Little to no stream of water and sometimes sounds like air trying to come out of hole. Engine runs fine otherwise. Thanks in advance for any help.

Tell Tale retriction will not generally cause overheating as it does not have anything to do with recirculating the water. You probably should be checking your thermostats, better yet replace them as they are only about $10-12.00 each. Maybe even the poppit valve. Time for an OEM engine manual.

Re: water not coming out of peehole

The 150 has a rt angle 3/8" fitting right in the center of the engine right behind the flywheel, on top of the block. The connecting tube goes down to another fitting under the block and drains into the midsection. We cut this and installed the tee that was in the other line coming from the stats to feed the pee spiggot. Then we put a 3/8" plastic union (auto parts store ) in the line from the stats where the tee had been. Piece of cake and works great. Takes about 1 minute at idle on muffs to get water.....block has to fill up first.

To answer another question, the pee comes off a tee using a smaller hose than the thru hose that allows water to circulate from the stats. A clog there would be unnoticeable to the engine function. Essentially that's what we did when we moved the tee to the other hose.

Thanks for the info. Since the water is now coming out of the heads to your pee hose, where does the water from the t-stats go that would normally discharge thru the pee hole? I guess this won't hurt anything?

Re: water not coming out of peehole

The water from the thermostats circulates through the block and out of the hose that Texasmark is telling you to cut and tee. That hose goes to your poppit valve assy. If you are not getting a tell tale, fix it, do not bypass the design of the engine ( sure you will get water flowing). If your thermostats are working, then you will get a tell tale when they open at 143 degrees.
If the poppit valve is stuck open, then the engine runs extremely cold as the block does not pressurize properly as most of the water dumps out through the exhaust. As I said in the upper post, both are cheap repairs and very simple to do.
