Hello everyone, figured Id start a thread about my "project". Its more like a fixer upper, but either way Im putting man hours into it so its my little project :)

Well to make a long story short, I came across a guy selling a 1989 Monterey 1900 19' bowrider for 650 bucks. I figured this was a steal cause Id expect to pay that for the trailer it sits on alone, so I went and bought the thing and started getting it into shape. When I bought it, there was about 8" of ice on the floor so I had to let that thaw out before I could get it out of there. I didnt let it completely thaw cause I didnt want all that water on the floor, but lately its been nice so I've had a lot of days to work on it. Reason it was so cheap is because it apparently doesnt move when you try to accelerate... so the prop is in the shop getting re-hubbed and hopefully that will cure the problem.

Here are the pictures the guy took and sent to me when I showed interest:

As you can see theres some stuff that needs to be done to the interior. It was littered with leaves, beer cans, and ice... so first things first I got that crap cleaned out. There's still some little leaf pieces but its going to get a shop-vac treatment here soon, Im just waiting for the carpet to dry out completely.

The first thing I needed to do was make some rear seats for it on the sides of the doghouse. There were just holes, so I started from scratch. Here's a before and after:

You can also see that yellow stuff needs to be replaced. Thats next on my list of things to do once I find some yellow vinyl. Im also going to recover that black/gray part thats on the doghouse as well as cover the entire doghouse in black vinyl to make it look nice. Theres also a couple side pieces that I need to fab up and cover with some vinyl, so those will come soon as well.

Today I just went out and decided I'd redo the bow area. The seat bottoms were cracked and disgusting so I decided to pull them out, clean under them, and make something new. While looking at boats yesterday at a local boat show, I liked how some boats have an entirely flat bow with just basically a sun deck in the front of it, so I decided that this is what I was going to do with the front of my boat. By doing this it also gave me an area for storage which was lacking before in this boat... so now I have a sun deck and lots more storage space. Im going to put a door over the opening of the storage area and cover that in matching vinyl with the seats to make it look nice. Also in the bow theres part of the original padding still in there, and once I find some white vinyl Ill be matching it with the rest of sides on the front. I didnt take any before pictures, but here's how it looks now. First picture is looking at it from the front of the boat, second is while in the boat, and 3rd is showing the little storage area I now have.

Thats as far as I am right now... here's some other pictures of the boat for you enjoyment:

I thought my $500 wonder was a steal. You might have just as well forced him to pay you cash to take it. Love it when someone stumbles on the deal of the decade.

great deal. did you do a compression check. watch the exhaust manifolds. see if you can find out the last time they were changed, also the bellows, and the last the the outdrive's been serviced, and aligned. the guys in the I/O forum can tell you all about your engine, get a manual on engine and outdrive.

Havnt done a compression test, guy said the motor ran fine last time it was out, the problem with it is when its in gear it doesnt move forward. Im hoping its a prop hub but we'll see.

I hope you got a good find. Since it was left uncovered you may have more problems down below. How is your solid is the floor and transom? Water left inside a boat's bilge does a lot of hidden damage.

What you have there is potential! Great find. Even if you parted out everything you are way ahaed in the terms of value.

Don't worry about not having the outdrive work right now...... make sure it has not frozen and water in the block and let things crack. I would checl for freeze plug and block integrity first.

The outdrive can be removed and a new impellar should be installed even before you water test it or even run it on the muffs.

I would guess step one should be GET A MANUAL to cover the engine and outdrive. That is a great engine set-up!

I imagine we will see alot of you here! Great project.

Floor is solid all the way around, transom looks good too. So far everything looks good in terms of structural integrity. Impeller was changed back in June so that should be good. Lower unit feels pretty good, Ill drain that out and replace the lube in there before I run it. There seems to be no water in any of the cooling hoses so thats a good sign. I checked the oil and it looks brand new... not milky or anything like that. Power steering fluid is low, but thats no big deal. I hooked a battery up to it today and all the lights work in the guage cluster, nav lights work, courtesy lights work, trim works, it goes into gear with the motor off, the horn works, bilge pump works, blower switch needs to be replaced cause its kinda messed up, but besides the trim guage and blower switch, everything seems to be up to par.

I put a new pair of speakers in it today, gonna get another in there tomorrow and hopefully get the radio in there too. I've got a couple other pieces I need to recover with vinyl, then just clean it up real well and check it out before I start it up on the muffs. Ill let you all know my progress as I go along.

This is actually my second boat. The last one I had was a '73 Chrysler Silverline with a 105hp chrysler outboard. I replaced the flooring in that and fixed it up a bit. Bought it for 450 bucks and sold it for 1500 so I made a nice profit on that. I cant complain though, for a 23 year old finishing up college... this is definitely more than enough boat for me :)

Now if only I could hook a dang hitch up to my Mustang to pull it lol 8)

Gettin a little ahead of yourself, aren't ya Zim? I'd say you have a lot of other issues to nail down before you get to any frivolous cosmetics.

Re: My $650 project boat thread.

It is unbelievable how nice the seats and exterior look for the age and the fact that it was trashed and had a snow drift in it! It must have been well taken care of for a long time then just left out for a short time! Why anyone would do that is beyond me. Certainly a steal! Parting it out is worth way more than you paid (like you said, trailer alone pretty close). Seats look nice, etc.

Be vey careful if you put kids in that bow! With no place to put their feet they will bounce all around. I'd say it's fine for two in lounge position on sides (can hold onto something). But not a bunch rifing up there. Still, it looks like a fun spot to ride!

Keep posting photos as you go along.

Re: My $650 project boat thread.

Only deal I know of which beats this one is a friend of mine in NC who did a simple 2 hour power wash of a house for a customer. Instead of paying him the 200 bucks or so, the customer offered my friend his boat, which he'd noticed my buddy admiring...he no longer used it. Once the cover was removed, it revealed an 81 Carlson C500 with a 150 merc - in near perfect condition. No re-conditioning necessary at all! The guy was done with it, considered selling it, but my friend did the power wash on the right day I guess!!

Well I dont have any kids so I dont think I have to worry about that lol. Im only 23 and am about to get done with college this May. Yeah basically just the two middle seats are in good condition... I dont even know if those are original seats. Maybe? I dont know, I cant find any other pictures ANYWHERE of the same model and year boat to tell.

I got another nice day today, so more work will be done :)

oh......NOW I "get it" ....I see what you have in mind for that "Bow Bed" you made! No kids, still in college.....now it adds up. NICE move, good luck on that one.

When you re-cover the doghouse, I'd say put a 2" piece of good closed-cell foam on top...it's a nice spot to lean on/hang out, it acts as an armrest for the jump seats, and makes it look much nicer. Or maybe it has the pad ....so you just re-vinyl to make it more uniform.

Also, would the yellow pads on the transom area look better if they were level on top? I can't figure out what that's supposed to look like. I'm working on the same area of my 1985 19' BR so these things are of interest to me. I already re-did the bow seats 9just nice new foam). I also re-foamed the B-2-B seats that fold down. I bought and will be adding a smallish removable table behind the helm captains chair. Easy job, can have it on or put it away, great for fixing the eats on.

Re: My $650 project boat thread.

Uh oh, I found something today that I havnt seen before (been too busy with the topside of the boat). Seems some of whatever the white stuff is around the boat has peeled off. How do I fix this, and more importantly how to do raise the boat enough to get under the area that sits on the bunk? Can I use a hydrolic jack with a piece of wood on it to disperse the surface area pressure or what?

Never done any work like this, but am mechanically inclined as well as very good with my hands, so Im willing to tackle it. Can anyone give me some advice?
