1984 evinrude 3 cylinder 65 horse has a surging problem all cylinders have 120 compression all coils have spark and all wires and plugs are fine. i pulled the spark plug wire off each cylinder while it was running (using rubber handled pliers!) and the number one cylinder isnt doing anything i removed the intake cover and put my hand over it while it was running and it didnt do anything either, it has a very small amount of fuel going to the top cylinder, do you think it is just a carb problem? thanks

Either a carb problem or a reed problem. If you see a lot of gas inside the intake silencer by #1, that would be a fair indicator of a reed problem. Otherwise plan on cleaning out the carb. If it has varnish in it, do all three.

running with poor fuel flow to #1 is also poor lubrication to #1. fix it before you blow it up, score a cylinder, break a ring. so far you're lucky.

I bet on the carbs too, covering the carb to choke it with no effect ,tells you the carb isnt getting fuel, like said,do yourself a favor and clean all 3,you miht want to get new float needles and seats, you can buy them without needing to buy the whole carb kit, however if things look real crappy when disassembled ,buy the whole kit,you can buy aerosol carb cleaner at auto stores,it is always best to soak the carb in solution ,but the stuff can be a little costly,if the carbs arent too bad the spray cleaner, using the provided plastictube to clean passages should? do it for ya

my friend is a marine mechanic so he can get the whole kit for 11 bucks for each carb so im going to rebuild all three i pulled them apart already and nothing really struck me as odd there was the obligatory imploded fuel hoses and bad rubber on the needle valve thing. they all looked the same when pulled apart, the number one carb didnt show any difference as far as the fuel jets or the gaskets in comparison to the other 2 carbs.

yea thanks for the big help ive put together a few 2 stroke scooters saying that is not helping. really 2 strokes are lubricated by the oil in the fuel?? no way! i just bought it and ran it when i got it in the water and noticed it wasnt running well. i ran it at my house with the earmuffs to find out the problem wether it be ignition or fuel starvation. your remarks are not needed and unless you have something informative please dont reply thank you
