Hello All... this is my first post so be gentle! I have come into possession of a 1959 Evinrude 10 hp. Mechanics is not an issue as it is a former career (about 3 careers ago) and I have a service manual. But what I don't know and don't know where to look concerns the latching mechanism at the front of the cowling. 59 was the first year of the somewhat boxy fiberglass cowling. The lever at the back works great, but at the front all I have is a small square hole in the cowl and what looks to be a place to mount something to the body of the motor just in front of the carb. Can anyone tell me or perhaps show me what the front latch looks like?

Howdy, 58.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Try tcoutboard.com. They probably know the piece that fits there and have a used one for sale.

My memory of my 50s 10 is a bit faded, but I think that was a hook sort of thing that hooked into the lower part of the cover.

Good luck. :)

it sounds like the choke knob. they had a square shaft, with a round knob, with a screw in the middle. you pull it out to choke the engine. open the cover, and behind the hole should be the linkage for the choke. you can put a long bolt in it temporarilly, so you can choke the engine to start. as you can see in the diagram, the choke link is square. you're probably missing parts 39,40,41 plus the screw which isn't nut

Thank you, but no... surprisingly, considering that the motor has been carried on a four wheeler for the last two years and has been dropped hard enough to break off a part of the cavitation plate, the motor is mechancially sound. All parts are in place, including all controls, choke, shut off button, mixture dials, etc. However, there is a remnant of a latch or hook or ??? immediately inside the motor at the front that looks like it might have been used to attach to the some other catch on the cowling.

So here we go... some pix. One is the cowl of course... square hole apparent. The other is inside and you will notice the remnants of a latch of some sort that I assume hooked to "something" on the inside of the cowl. Ideas? Information? Someone to contact? Incidentally, the images shown are sized as thumbnails at 160X120 on Photobucket but they are taking up a whole screen on the preview regardless. Might be able to use some further guidance on that too!

Man, I sure wish I had a parts book but I don't. I am sure it was some sort of a bracket that linked up with what is left there when the hood was on, but released when the hood was tilted forward. Whatever it was, it was only used for '59-'60 years because when they changed hood shape they changed that too. Anybody around here have the parts book?

OK, for whatever it is worth, I found this and blew it up size-wise. Looks like there is a cast bracket in there and a spring, and ?

The is what you want to copy and paste into here...it is the third listing of details for your pic.

I assume Saskatoon (there is a song in there somewhere) from your comment that you see a small image. Mine however almost covers the screen. Photobucket tells me I need to clear my cookies, cache and temporary internet files. Unfortunately this is a school office computer and I cannot access those functions... Big Brother is watching! Case is solved as it turns out. Thank you all for your help.

Woo hoo... that's perfect! The part of the latch on the motor is complete. I am only missing the part that screws into the cowling and then slips under the spring steel hook on the motor itself. Thank you to all for your help!
