Re: Is this a starter problem?

Well, good news and bad news.

Good news is the motor seems to be ok, after I pulled the drive the motor spun free as a bird.

Bad news is, I dont know whats wrong with the outdrive and whether its in the upper or lower unit. So now what do I do?

I love helpful forums :)

Re: Is this a starter problem?

The easiest, (maybe cheapest) way would be to buy an after market drive (SEI) off of ebay.....
About $1200. :%
You could pull it apart & see what is stuck/broken, but I think you would be in over your head....
Not to mention the cost of the tools involved that are required to pull apart, shim & reseal a drive......
If you want to get up & running quickly, the new drive would be the way to go......
You could take it to a shop & have them fix it ....
You're still likely looking at $1200. :'(

I Agree with Haut,........

But,.........

About the only 2 things you Can do, without Abunch of Speciality Tools,....
Is to Drian the Oil,+ Look for contaminates......
And,.. Pull the little Top Cover off the top of the Drive,.... You'll be able to See the Upper Gearset thru there.....

Re: Is this a starter problem?

Ok now just a general question. How far down into the drive do those shafts spin before it gets to the "transmission" where the thing goes into forward and reverse? I was able to spin the prop on the prop shaft, so does that seem like the lower unit might be ok and Im looking at an upper unit problem? Or is there really no way to tell?

Drain the gear lube & split the lower & upper cases.....
Pat close attention to the condition of the gear lube.....
If it is discolored or milky, you have a water intrusion problem.....
If you see metal shavings.....
Not good....
The lower & upper are connected through an oil passage.....
When one half is infected, both are......:'(
Drain it & post back.......JK

Well, when I pulled the whole drive off of the girdle there was water in there, and the U joints on the shaft that is visible/hanging out on the upper unit is all rusty. :/

Sound like water intrusion?

Yup.......:'(
Now you need to inspect the condition of the bellows to see if they are bad.....
There should never be water in the space that is occupied by the u joints....
Either the bellows went bad & let water into the drive or a seal on the drive went bad & allowed water into the drive & then into the bellows past the yoke seal.........
Did you just get this boat, or have you had it for awhile....

Re: Is this a starter problem?

Just got it, bought it for real cheap and knew there was probably problems with the outdrive so I was kind of expecting this.

Sorry for my boat noob-ness, but whats the bellow and where is it? :$

Re: Is this a starter problem?

The bellows (there are three) are the flexible rubber boots that connect the drive to the transom and seal out the water.
I think your next purchase ( if you plan on repairing this boat yourself) should be the merc manuals for your engine and drive

Don's on vacation, somebody had to say it.

Yeah I've looked at it, I figured it out though.... bellows look like they're in OK shape, must have been a leak in one of the gaskets.

If you get the drive fixed or replaced go ahead and replace the bellows. They are not that expensive and a good thing to do while the drive is off.

Re: Is this a starter problem?

I still think it was you starter though - have it bench tested. Was the boat in gear when you tried to manually turn the motor? You will want to replace lots of parts since you have water intrusion and everything is apart. Gimble berings, U-joints and bellows. Be sure to pack gible bearings good with grease. Also my boat has trim limiters on the outdrive - be sure to rewire them while putting everything back together.

Re: Is this a starter problem?

Wonder if it sunk?( Or enough water inside to get in bellows?)
