i have this motor that came with a hydro-electric throttle control, (white) with one cable and an electric cable coming out from the front part with a white rectangular connector (that has 3 prongs). Also noticed when I opened up the cover, there is this motorola box (kind of big mounted on the side corner closest to spark plugs, never seen anything like it) on is marked (automotive products) ..with a black rectangular connector and 2 other small black connectors. What the hell is that?

Main question is, from a control box like that, one cable & white connector coming from the front of it (which i dont know where to connect on the motor).. it all seems like im missing couple things.. how do I start the motor, this box does not have a key or place to insert a key (to start the motor). Is it suppose to have one cable or two !? Can someone help and give me some pointers about this! How do I connect up!? what am I missing!?

You need a shop that still works with old motors.Yours is a 1968.You are missing at least a dash panel that would have an ignition and choke switch,as well as an engine on and an engine over heat light. Also the cable that connects the engine, control box and dash panel.

Re: johnson 55hp - TRL-10R

there are 3 types of shifts. yours is on of the 2 electric shifts. the control box sends a signal to the unit on the engine to shift the gears. there are a couple of guys here that are knowlegable on these. edit your title, add "hydro/elect" it will get there attention. good luck. it's going to be hard to find a mech. that knows these.

Re: johnson 55hp - TRL-10R

is it possible to hook up one of those aftermarket "quicksilver" control on this outboard ..without going and finding a used dash & switches etc.

also does this outboard get the shift signal from the cable (from the controller to throttle lever on the outboard) that connects to the throttle lever on the motor or gets the signal from the "dash" electronics that i need to find and install??

reason i said the cable beacuse that white control has only one cable and in the front one white rect. connector with three wires and nothing else. i suppose the the white rect. connector goes to the dash electronics?

To begin, the motor is shifted by hydraulic pressure. The hydraulic pressure is activated by electric solenoids in the lower unit. It will always be in forward gear when not running because the hydraulic oil pump is not turning. The electric solenoids are switched on and off by a switch in the remote control. The wires you are speaking of go to that shift switch.

You must be missing the main wiring harness and instrument panel with all the other goodies. The wires from the remote control plug into that main harness.

The Motorola thing you mention is the ignition "black box" properly called an amplifier. It receives 12 volts from the ignition switch and converts it to 300 volts which is discharged through the ignition coil to be converted to thousands of volts to fire the spark plugs.

DO NOT go messing with any of the electric stuff without knowing exactly what you are doing. If you do, and blow that black box, you are in for major $ part replacement costs.

You need to go back and get the rest of your motor. The small cable #50 is on the motor, you need everything else. It is all part of the motor as shipped from the factory.

First you have to have it stored somewhere on the internet. I use photobucket.com. It's free. Then once you have it on the net, there will be a URL (address) for it. Then when you type your post here, click the yellow mountain icon above the text box and a place will pop up to put the url. Copy and past the url in the pop up and the rest is automatic.

Re: johnson 55hp - TRL-10R - hydro/elect

F_R.. thanks alot, its more clear now, Im missing the whole instrument panel (ie. dash) & a wire harness that goes hooks up to the motor. I dont understand why they made so complicated motors back then..

yah now i see that the white rect. plug from the controller plugs into #32.

Anybody happen to have the wiring id chart for the bottom harness (#54, one on the motor) ?? pinout of each wires, what they are? Thinking if hooking up like a universal type controller (quicksilver) to this motor, eliminating the need of the dash & dash wire harness.

thats a great picture.. you got a great manual.. i dont believe my johnson seloc manual has this & in color.. i'll have to print and see what i can plan up over the weekend.

basically want the basic functions to work like:

- starting / shutting off (need seperate circuit for this .ie.wiring)
- electric choke
- remotely electric shifting (this can be done from the current controller)

thats all isnt it??

btw. thank alot for getting back so fast.. you are great help F_R!

the quick silver is a mercury controller, not a Johnson?evinrude. they are not compatable. the throw for the linkage is different.
