Re: Mercury 35 Elo

On the swival bracket there should be a rev. lock down, it's a set of pawls that engage the tilt pin when the engine is in neutral or rev. If they are stuck or the acttuater spring is broken or the rev lock cam is not working they will not engage on the tilt pin to hold the engine down

Jess the chances are that someone has taken the unit off and either lost the reverse cam or has it installed in the wrong position on the shift shaft, which means your probably gonig to have to drop the lower unit to ck it - Bob

If you look at the parts break down on the lower unit it sets on the shiftshaft part number 43308T1, there is also a spacer washer number 78036 that could be missing

OK, I see what you are saying, how hard is it to take the leg off, what should I look for when I put the leg back on, I think it had a new water pump put in it in the last year???, would this happen if the water pump was done??? should I put a new impeller in, I want to do this right, thank's

Just a thought here, if you want to do your own maintenance on your motor, you NEED the OEM service manual. All it is, is another tool in your tool box. But without it you may never find the problem. The OEM manual details how it's all put together and adjusted.
Who knows, your reverse lock may be put together correctly, just totally out of adjustment.
As far as the impeller goes, if you don't know how old it is, yes it needs changed. The impellers are inexpensive.

Re: Mercury 35 Elo

Thats probably when it happened, first you really need a manual, that said
Shift the unit in to rev. gear, take a awl and mark the position of the trim tab with a scratch make for reinstallation, remove the trim tab through the hole on the leg right above the tab then remove 1 nut thats under the tab, next remove the nut under the cavitation plate then the 2 nuts from the studs going up through the bottom of the leg 1 on either side at this point the unit should come down. I forgot if the small hose from the lower unit for a speedometer is connected you will have to disconnect it also

The OEM Mercury manual is best, you may even find one on ebay. The Merc PN is 90-42794--1 dated 6/90

Went down to the Public Library, they have two Manual, not very good one, Clymer Mercury outboard shop manual 2.5-40HP 1972-1989, Seloc Mercury outboard tune-up and repair manual, call around that it, so read them a few time, can't find much about reverse locking, I pull the leg off, I think the reverse cam is not set right, have look at all the parts break down photos, ( all the parts are there ) I have photos, but can't get them to work on here, Thank's for you time, Jess

If a local dealer won't or can't supply you with a manual take your serial number to Mercury Parts Express and they can send one to to you--Bob
