to go with the kitchen remodel we need to upgrade our electric service from 100 amp overloaded and potentially unsafe. we were going to go with a 150 amp but found out in the long run 200 was cheaper. the guy we chose has been around here forever and is the first name reccommended by most people that he won't break it off in you. I have called a bunch and either they are to busy don't do remodels or are too expensive. my guy's price was $1500 that includes permit, new meter can,200 amp panel all breakers and tieing in all the house and if needed running new wire to make it to code. he said about 1 1/2 days to do it does this sound about right? jim

Lets see 12 hours work + time to get permit + supplies = $1500

Job that will last your life time from a reputable contractor = priceless

I agree with bucky7680
Also around here that would be considered cheap.
A friend was just quoted 4,000 to rewire her 750 sq foot house.
That was with existing meter can and breaker box.

But I don't know what exactly was involved.

If they are reputable then that is a great deal.

Re: Ouch electrician's estimate

I told him to go ahead it has to be done and I cannot do that part of it.the cost is a concern (unforseen expense)but I know that after it is done the house will be SAFE for my family. this guy comes highly rated and I am sure that if I called a company out of tulsa or stillwater it would be at least double that. I hope he starts soon so I can get the sheetrock up. my cabinets will be here in about 2 weeks. isn't remodeling an old house fun.

I would also say jump on it. That's not something you can DIY with all the permits, and killing the main power.

Re: Ouch electrician's estimate

I normally do service changes which do not include upgrading anything in the house wire wise,Installing gfci or anything like that.....Just basically getting rid of a fuse panel and putting in a 100A breaker panel....Usually around 900-1300 depending on the difficulty of the job....So for a 200A panel and updating anything in the house for that is a good deal...

Cover your a$$ and make sure he is licensed and insured/bonded....

Check on local codes...If he has to run new wires, have the knowledge and the restraint to make him do it....

Re: Ouch electrician's estimate

he is licenced and insured. he offered to come on the weekend if needed to get it done. he has been around for a long time.
my wife hit me with a shocker tonight she wants to sell the camper so we don't dump our savings account that we are just getting built back up after having the baby last summer and her being out on 1/2 pay and my middle son is having his tonsils out on the 16th so thats another bill we hadn't planned on. I want a newer one in a year or so anyway and we only used it 5 days last year. I can't sell it till we get the kitchen done its our storage unit right now.

be sure he pulls permits. If not and there is fire your insurance may not pay off.

Re: Ouch electrician's estimate

well I put the camper on craig list last thursday and i'll be damned it sold today so now I am without a storage unit till I haul my stuff to the inlaws house. I decided today to pull the old wires out of the kitchen and was going to run new but when i got in the attack what i found scared me there was old knob and tube going no where and it was still hot buried under the insulation also it was hooked up to romex by just twisting and tape (on some) also an old doorbell transformer that was still hooked up and just laying there with one wire exposed to the insulation why this place didn't burn down years ago I have no idea.

Re: Ouch electrician's estimate

well the electrician came yesterday and today and is almost finished with the job he has a couple of small things to do and will be done and inspected. he has done really nice clean work. it is amazing I just turned the drier on and the lights didn't dim at all:^ . I have to pull 2 ceiling fans down and the lights in my bathroom and rewire them and all the new wiring in the kitchen and the light in the laundry room.(we are moving a wall and the switch is getting moved. he only charged $60/hr for truck and 2 guys (him and his son) I am totally satisfied with his work. hopefully friday I can get that all done and start hanging drywall saturday morning.

oh yeah the old main breaker was half melted when he pulled it out of the box:eek:

Re: Ouch electrician's estimate

well after friday morning the inspector came and gave us the all good but then said that if I do my own wiring and have an electrical fire my insurance won't pay so I proceeded to show him the old stuff I ripped out and said if that didn't burn I don't think properly sized romex and junction boxes would, he agreed and I have been busy busy sense. I have all the wiring done except my bathroom and a couple of plugs that were casualities of the bad old wiring, the drywall hung except for around a window I am waiting for and have started mudding and taping. I did the 2 bedrooms tonight after work. I will be doing more mudding tomorrow night and hopefully this weekend primer and paint.
