I have a middle 70's 6hp that don't quick have the strength it needs for my boat.

Will the carb off of a 9+ work on the 6hp ?

Are there high speed jet upgrades for the 6 ?

Thanks...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that the only motors you can really upgrade with a carb swap is the 9.9 -> 15hp. If you need that 10% extra you might try some boysen reeds. But, if you really need a 9.9 or better you should sell what you've got and buy another motor.

perk,no,it wont work, even if the the carb mounted on the engine the internals wont let it happen. The 9.9 is a real nice engine ad you will find a big differance in performance. The 15 ,even better, same weight as the 9.9,depending on yr. of courese. My replies are based on the late 70's to early 90's models. As for the 9.9 conversions and the 15 .the exhust is different as well, it's not just in the carb.I did research on it long ago because I wanted a stronger kicker for my 23 footer.

Good to know mike. Not like I'm going to be trying it out tomorrow, but good to know anyway.

Boysen is a brand name. Not sure how much difference they'd make on that little 6hp, probably not any that you'd notice at the top end anyway.

There's lots of call for those 6-ers. They're an excellent kicker and idle down to a dead-slow crawl. Put out the word, and you may find someone wanting to trade down in size on their current 9.9.

They are good little motors.
My brother in-law is complaining that his don't push his 12ft, 10 g, all-weld aluminum, jon boat like it should.
I don't think it is tuned right, personally, but thought I'd pass the afternoon looking into the 9+ conversion.

Feel free to provide tuning tips.

Thanks folks....

If he's never done a decarb, that may be all the tuning that needs to happen.

Can you give me some detail on decarb ?
Is to clean the carbon build-up or take the carburetor off and clean / kit ?

See the last post in the thread for, in my opinion, the easiest way to decarb.

To the best of my knowlege, there is no 33% increase in HP unless you go nitrous, and that makes engine life short term.Even the 9.9 to 15 is more parts than just the carb. And to do it to a 70's engine ..... she'll blow...

At any rate, decarb it,tune it and enjoy what you have or trade for what you really should have bought.
