1966 100 HP shift cable installation

Can anyone help? I want to install a new Shift Cable into the Lower Unit of my 1966 V4ML-12R 100HP Outboard. The Grommet is a very tight fit.

Welcome to iboats RJW!

Could you give a little more info on what grommet your referring to? This is an electric shift engine?

Don't have the parts breakdown here but maybe one of our other guys with more experience with these engines (lot nicer than saying one of the "older" guys....d:) ) will come along and add some helpful advice.

Older Guy here.
If I remember correctly, it pulls out of the spacer from the bottom. #20 is a retainer ring. If it tears up, so what. You are going to replace it anyway.

Thanks for responding, this is my first experience with this type of forum. I did try some soapy water, when it didn't seem to be working I got real nervous. Thanks again.

Re: 1966 100 HP shift cable installation

The Shift Cable is item #11 on the parts breakdown. I did not see item # 20, the Retainer Ring, when I removed my old Cable. The Manual does say to use a lubricant when installing a new Shift Cable.
Thanks to all

May need something a little more than soapy water. Try a little grease and work it in. Been a long time since I've worked one of these.

Yeah, that's about when arthur started attacking my knees. But I got that fixed with some titanium ones.

Getting off topic here.

Re: 1966 100 HP shift cable installation

Thanks again, after reading the replies to my question I decided I would try again with some dish soap. I was successful this time. I have to say that pushing and pulling on a expensive wire is very concerning. I was very careful, but I felt like I needed to make sure that I did not damage the wires after pulling on the Cable Assembly. I checked the continuity of the wires and everyhing looks good.
Thanks again to all
