I have a 5.7Merc StingRay Bowrider with an Alpha GenII.

I'd like to build a pipe+2x4 stand that i can use to hold the drive when dropping the lower for water pump maintanance.

I'd like to make it suitable for removing the upper+lower in order to maintain the gimble bearing, bellows, UJoints...etc.

QUESTION 1:
What are good touch points on the aluminum outdrive that won't risk breakage ?

Deck boards on a work bench are fine for small jobs

I am 51 with a bad back and find its easy to put a piece of wood under the skeg and wiggle it on and off and carry it to the bench

Going back On is tricky the first time so you might need a friend

I would not try to do anything by just droping the lower while the upper is still on the boat

To much stuff to line back up right

Building a stand out of 2x4's and dont have the drive with me. How wide should the opening at the top be to allow it to rest on the cavetation plate? Right now i got it at about 5 inches...but without the drive here its tough to tell if that will be too wide or not. Thanks.

Here is a pic of one DonS makes from a square foot of plywood and some 2x6's. Pull the complete drive, then lift the upper off the do the pump service.
