VRO pump rebuild or not????

Can a VRO pump be rebuilt my mechanic say it is a non-servicible item and needs to be replaced cost $300 for pump then labor what do you guys say?1991 Johnson fastrike 150,J150GLEIS thanks for your imput

JMO, You can buy the pump by it self. It costs about half and you can put it in yourself. I took off my vro and just run 50:1. Never have to worry about the pump cutting out and loosing the power head. There are others that say having a pump is good and they last a long time. IT's up to you. 150.00 and a new one or 300.00 for a rebuilt.

Head to ebay and put in VRO pump. There are some there for around 200.00....They have rebuild kits for the fuel side. Not sure about the oil side....

albass, if I were you I'd first find another mechanic. I found out the hard way that the vro pumps are rebuildable; parts can be found at:
www.maxrules.com
I got screwed by a dealer here in Maine last summer and have not been back since. If this guy lies to you about the vro pump, what else does he try to cheat you on?

I would have told you some parts of the vro can be rebuilt and then told you I won't rebuid them.Is that closer to what he said ?

The VRO is a great system,seldom has oil side problems, and after 16 years I would't try to patch either side of it.

I would buy a new complete pump and keep on boating.

BUT, like DHP said, it may not be a great idea to rebuild a 16 y/o pump. The plastic does not take well to reassembly.
