This is my very first tume posting on here

I have a 1980 Mercruiser, GM-140hp I/O. When i put it away for the frist time last fall i just put fuel stablelizer in the gas and fogged the carbureuter and then put antifreeze in the motor. I am new at all this and need some info.

When getting it out-- what do i need to do first? drain the antifreeze? then change oil? Do i need to change the lower unit oil? I did not change the lower unit oil befor i put it away. I bought the boat last year frist time owning a boat. any thing else that needs done

I would change the oil & filter....
The water separating fuel filter, (if you have one).....
Drain, check & refill the gear lube, by all means....
This should be done at the end of the season to see if there are any seal problems....;)
If the gear lube comes out milky or discolored, you have a problem......
The drive should be pulled & the u joints greased......
Pull the distributer cap & visually inspect.....
In fact, the entire engine should be inspected for wear, (hoses, belts, wiring).......
Then drain the anti-freeze & fire it up on the muffs.....
Welcome to iboats, btw.......:)

Well, there are several scenarios.....
Bottom line is that it means that you are getting water in your drive.....
Somehow.....
Let's hope this is not the case.......;)

It would be a good idea for you to buy a factory service manual. It will step you through winterizing, filling the outdrive lube, tune up,removing the outdrive and servicing the u-joints,bellows,ect.
all very important things to maintain on an I/O

Welcome Aboard!!

Re: Geting boat out for the summer

Most likely.....
There was no gear lube when you drained the drive?
About a quart of water came out?
Have you pulled the drive itself yet?If it sat all winter with water in it, stick a fork in it......:%
You will at least need to have the drive disassembled, internals inspected, replace whatever cannot be salvaged & resealed......
Aftermarket drives are about $1200, which will probably be cheaper actually.......
You need to inspect your u joint bellows to see if there is a hole in them.......
Water will get into the drive if they are bad.....
If their condition is even questionable, you should replace them, or the same thing will happen to your new drive.........
Here is the link to the service manual for your drive.......

Wish I had something good to say......:'(
Good Luck!......:)

Haut is right - it is probably done. However, just for kicks i would pump it up with some gear oil and try starting it with the muffs on and put it in gear. If the motor stalls or you hear alot of grinding then it is probably junk. If it goes in gear good then it might be salvageable. you will still need to get a lot of work done on it since you have water intrusion. ie gimble bearings, u joints and bellows at least. I'd rather be surfing.

It only takes a couple teaspoons of water to trash the bearings and gears. It's hard to believe only water came out when you drained it....:%

I can deal with a new re-seal job. I dont know what im going to do if its the bearing and gears. I spun the prop and it seemed normal that in neutral. Now when i put in in gear i can turn it and it turns and i can hear it poping im sure that becouse theres no greas in there .not sure if it was gears and bearings are not damaged. you would think it would not spend freely right???

Re: Geting boat out for the summer

Sorry, it is toast....
You will be fooling yourself if you think that you can just reseal it......
The tools alone to perform the task cost several hundred dollars.....
If you are going to go into business & reseal drives, then buy them.....
I am not trying to be a bummer....
If you have a drive full of water & it sat all winter, it is done....
You can refill it with new gear oil & take it out, but....
It will fail....
If you are a single, young guy ....
Not so bad.....
Your wife & kids?
I urge you not to take the chance.....
Read the link I provided....
Get some tools.....
Some of the work you can do.....
But I do not think you have the knowledge to sucessfully rebuild a drive......IMHO......:)
