This pick goes from first gear thru third and stays there, it does'nt get up into fourth.
I suspect that it might be a relay fuse but would like some more pointers before i let a mechanic shop look at it.

It's computer controlled. If it's shifting at all it's not going to be a fuse or relay problem. :'(

[colour=blue]Could also be in 'safe' mode. Some ECU's delete overdrive under certain conditions.

Need to talk to the ECU or BCM.

not sure about the nissan
but most modern cars/trucks must reach a temp. above 160/170 degrees before the converter will lock up, so dont rule out the thermostat before doing major repairs,

Today i drove it on a short ten mile round trip and it shifted all the way thru to fourth without any signs of the previous problem. ???

You might be on to something there, the temp guage goes up to only a quarter of the way to the half way mark, i'll try changing the thermostat and see what happens.
This problem is an intermittent one, everytime i ride with someone in the truck it behaves normal, the darn thing is making me look stupid. :|

if it's not running at least 190/195 you need a thermostat anyway, so you just may kill two birds with one stone.

It appears that i may have to remove the power steering pump to get access to it, Is there any other way?

Vlad, I really can't remember, it's been a while since I have done one, but, I don't remember it being a hard job, and I usually remember the hard ones, it should be 3 bolt housing behind the power steering pump, I think you can get to the bolts with a 10mm wrench

Re: 1997 4cyl Nissan PU auto tranny

I got it done, i had to move the power steering pump out of the way to gain access to the t/stat housing, in the process i took the opportunity to replace all of the belts.

The problem was the t/stat.
1. It was stuck on open.
2. it caused the choke never to go off.
3. It interfered with the overdrive causing the vehicle to not get into the fourth gear.

Everything works perfectly normal at the moment, later today i'm going to install some new plugs and change out the old plug wires.
Thanks for the insight, with your help i did kill a few birds with one stone. ;)
