Dell Quay Dory Grabrail

I have made a grab rail for my 13ft dell quay dory and was wondering if anyone knew what's under the gunwhales? I don't want to drill down and find there's not anything to grip.

Any help would be most helpful.d

Don't know Dell Quays well, rbro, but I do know that their construction is similar to my beloved Boston Whalers.

Based on that I would expect to find only foam under the outer fiberglass hull moulding except where optional features may be mounted.

Can you drill all the way through the gunwhale and put anchors under? I have done that when mounting bow trollers on Boston Whaler 13s.
