Hello, I've gotten a lot of help from all the posting here. I hope someone can help with this .I have a 1984 70 seahorse mechanical shift. I took off the lower unit and installed a new water pump and drive shaft seals. I have a manual and thought I followed it. But when I got the thing back together its seems that reverse is neutral and neutral is ingear. I would be greatful for any help

make sure the lower unit is in reverse, and the shift lever is in reverse. may have to drop lower to do it.

Did you set the shift rod height to the right spec? Is the rod in the clevis correctly? Are you shifting with the cables or with the cables removed and by hand?

When it's set up correctly and in neutral the shift arm on the powerhead will be just about straight up and down.

Thanks I had only removed the screw connecting the shift rod too the connector at the power head. Did'nt move anything else. I must not have had the lower unit in reverse. I guess I'll have to drop the unit again.
